It could always come up. Just wasn't a lot of use for non-breathing in the show yet.

I think the knife-throwing and manipulating them looks cooler on TV, but there’s no reason he can’t have both powers. Maybe Diego’s ability to hold his breath indefinitely will come up in the next season.

I honestly didn't know the manipulating was a power until they said it was, because I've seen too many weird physics in action movies. I was waiting for his non-breathing to come up even after we saw the knives.

Also like...that's why he's called the KRAKEN.

IIRC Gerard Way made a post about Diego and said that both he and the actor who plays Diego would love to explore his ability to hold his breath indefinitely, so that kinda gives me hope that we’ll eventually see that on the show.

Oh, sweet!

It seems pretty useful.

Maybe they just haven't figured out a visually interesting way to indicate it.

Yeah, sorry, OP, but...not having to breathe? That's great if your...underwater. Or being gassed. Or someone buries you alive. But it's not much of an offensive power, and not terribly interesting to watch.

Or if you're running or fighting and don't have to worry about losing your breath (and for someone so competitive with Luther, it easily becomes endurance against strength). There was a scene of them doing laps up and down the stairs as kids, for instance--just show everyone breathing hard except Diego.

Or the examples in the secret: Luther chokes people out several times over the course of the show--it wouldn't work on someone who can't be choked out, obviously, and again, with how competitive Diego is with Luther, gives him an edge. Hazel and Cha-cha are expressly shown to use garroting wire at least twice as well. Another great time to show Diego not have to worry about breathing.

Also, Diego in both the comics and the show uses all kinds of offensive fighting styles, not just knives, and Klaus doesn't even HAVE an offensive power in the show but still goes on missions. The knives, to me, were especially boring because we've SEEN that before. People throw knives impossibly well all the time. I assumed he'd just trained really well or something, like with everything else about his fighting style.

I still don't find it interesting at all. Knives are kinda boring, too, but...eh. It doesn't spark anything in me. To each their own.

Even if someone doesn't need to breathe, they could still get knocked out by a choke hold. Constricting the neck reduces blood flow to the brain.

not terribly interesting to watch

Took a lot of google-fu, but I found an interview with Gerard Way where he talks about how the Kraken's power is supposed to be lame.

https://www.darkhorse.com/Interviews/1489/Interview-with-Gerard-Way-9-26-07

I also really love a charcter that has no real tremendous power that benefits the team, but he's great with a knife.

I can't find the specific one I'm thinking of, but I feel like I read another interview where he talked about how Kraken knew it was a shit power and he started working on the knife thing to compensate. Or maybe it was said by the character in the comics themselves? It's been so long since my last reread I honestly don't know. I think it was in an interview because I remember him specifically being compared to Aquaman and his ability to talk to fish.

I have never read the comics, so yeah, no idea. But that's kinda funny.

And it fits with his world, really - and it seems a very Way thing to do.
Thanks for the link!

I wish I had more info for you! The comics are delightfully weird, and I definitely recommend them if you have the chance. I'm more into The Rumor than The Kraken, and comics!Rumor's power is one of the most interesting things to me. I liked how the show explored the way it affected her personal relationships, even though they limited what she does by a lot as compared to the comics.

Here's a FCBD short that's probably my favorite story in the whole TUA universe.

re-commenting because I forgot to go anon the first time, even though nothing I've said is anon-worthy but I like to keep it going

Thank you! :D

I have already forgotten that I saw your 'name'. No worries, Anon!

OP

(Anonymous) 2020-06-24 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh thanks for finding that! I definitely always like the idea of someone with a less-useful power who makes it work and finds ways to make up for it. It's so much more interesting to me than someone who has exactly the right power for a situation, you know?
