Not the OP, but you can be liberal and still be a Mormon. Whether some people choose to be more conservative politically because they feel it's more "aligned" with the church's teachings -- or whether they choose to be more conservative simply because that's what floats their boat -- is entirely their business. I believe how someone chooses to live their life and how someone thinks the country ought to be run from an administrative perspective are, like, two entirely, entirely different things, and I know there are other Mormons who feel the same way, too.

I've never read these Twilight books myself, but apparently a lot of people have beef with the way its relationships are portrayed, and I do find it a little off-putting that some look at that and go, "WELL IT'S OBVIOUSLY 'CAUSE SHE'S MORMON." Speaking as someone who was raised Mormon, my parents have done nothing but support my learning to become a self-sufficient, fully-educated woman, which are values the church also promotes. I've been surrounded by Mormon women who are doctors, lawyers, and FBI agents, just to name a few occupations that many of them hold. Some women choose to become stay-at-home moms, but that is their personal choice, and has nothing to do with them being "oppressed" by Edward-esque men or whatever.

If Meyer has ever said that the relationship she wrote between Bella and Edward was supposed to be some kind of Mormon ideal (and this is the first I've ever heard that, btw), she was mostly speaking for herself, 'cause she certainly wasn't speaking for me, and I doubt she was speaking for the church itself. :x

ANYWAYYY, I realize I'm getting tl;dr, 'cause Twilight = obv srz bzns lolol. I'm not upset or angry, just wanted to get that off my chest and possibly clear up any misconceptions people might have. :D

I see. I was under the impression that Mormonism was extremely strict, but I can definitely see your point especially since you know much more about it than I.

Ah, then we come to the difference between Mormons and Stephenie Meyer. Meyer specifically went to the higher ups before publishing her book to make sure Bella and Edward fit into the Mormon standards and when they requested a few edits, she made them. She went overboard to make Bella as non-threatening and pure as possible, so that she wouldn't raise any ire. There are traces of that clearly visible in Bella's character and interaction. The entire book isn't based on Mormonism, of course, and no one is defined by their religion, but Stephenie Meyer went out of her way to make a few moments of fundamental Mormonism visible. And that? Was a mistake for the book's content.

Meyer is crazy. Like, whatever hunk of crazy landed in Area 51 from outer space (where sparkling venomous EMO boys are the main species), she was carved from that. :D So I don't want to judge all Mormons by her standards by any means, and your comment helped expand my knowledge of practicing Mormons.

Woooooo learning from Twilight! They should make an after school special. "Kids, don't be like Bella, go out and actually get a job and independence and a personality."

It's true there are a lot of things required from members of the church, I won't lie about that. But Mormons can be found affiliating with either political party, and people within the church do have various opinions and ideas about how the government should be run. We're really not some kind of hive mind. :P

As far as Meyer appealing to the higher-ups in the church goes, do you have any articles or primary sources stating this? I'd like to have a look at it myself, if you don't mind. I will agree that fundamentalism of anything is BS and actually pretty dangerous, though. I wish people hadn't felt the need to avoid conflict in order to make things appear ~*pristine and sparkly*~. In the end, it just makes us look creepy and one-dimensional, which most of us aren't, honest. 8D;;

And, yeah, I mean...clearly there are people who take things to more extreme levels than others, which is unfortunate. Over-zealousness in anything is never a good idea.

I'm glad I was able to provide a little enlightenment! As someone who's been staying out of the whole Twilight craze, I've also found this discussion pretty interesting.

I believe Meyer stated it in one of her interviews that she conferred with her bishop, who was given manuscripts of the books before they were published, and she made a few small changes to the manuscript afterward. I think there was a transcript of the interview floating around that was where I managed to see it. Google it, maybe? The secret's OP actually replied to my comment and mentioned the bishop too, so I'm sure you can find a source for it since it's been mentioned somewhat frequently.

I completely agree- fundmentalism can go way too far, and trying to insert twisted values into a book about sparkly teenage vampires is under my category of "too far." XD

Ah, the Twilight craze claimed me this summer, when I became engulfed with hatred for it. I actually read the books and researched Meyer so I wouldn't be one of those douchebags who says they hate something and not know why. I hated every second of that book, and I've got lists and lists of why, but my mind slowly started forgetting them, hence why the exact source of Meyer's bishop conference eludes me. I guess I should be glad my mind is recovering. :D

Thanks for popping in to explain more about Mormonism and best of luck finding that interview!
