109: Someone actually thinks about this?

124: Ha ha, I think the show has gotten a million times better this season.

126: What the fuck?! Okay, first of all, someone writes fics about Colbert and Stewart? And this is a serious activity? Secondly, someone writes fics about them getting cancer?! And there's more than one?!

147: Mormonism is kind of like that, though. The church PAID to support Prop 8. Your politics really don't fit in there. It created the stereotype and expectations on its own.

151: LOL @ fans feeling that one gay character couple that writers are never going to have happen is "threatening" another gay (INCESTUOUS) character couple that writes are never going to have happen.

157: Good god almighty, that is some hideous art. This truly is a diverse world...

163: The guy does sort of look like Heath. Or maybe a cross between Heath and Jake. Their lovechild, one could say... If one were playing the Sims and cheating.

165: I totally crushed on him, too, dude.

168: That's kind of gross, but at least it's not Brand.

Does it always have to be all or nothing? I believe the basic concepts of the church and I hold the doctrines very dear, but at the same time, I find the church's attitude on prop 8 appalling. Why can't it be both? Honestly, why does religion always have to be all or nothing?

That really wasn't what my point was related to... It was more that people have reasons not to like the church, and aren't pulling things out of their butt when they assume things about you based on it.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
That seems silly, considering many other churches say the same things...

But do those churches excommunicate people for being gay? I don't know. And the rage from ex-Mormons just seem so much stronger than that from former members of other groups. Plus, people do assume things about members of other churches. They certainly do with Southern Baptism.

Keep up the fight, anon! One of my most memorable experiences with a Mormon was a guy on a messageboard who constantly explained all about how you became gay because homosexuals raped young boys and turned them gay. Unfortunately he pretty much did proudly say that this was the truth, which his church knew--and he was speaking to plenty of people, me included, who didn't know many other Mormons for variety. It would only be a good thing if other people's voices were heard.

Sadly it's an attitude perpetuated by ignorance. :/ I'm certain one day the church will change its policies on this, but that day isn't going to come anytime soon. I do my best, honestly, and I just hope I can communicate that we're not all militant crazies. I'm glad I'm not sounding too OMG OPPRESHUN or anything, here.

WISE WORDS FROM ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES IN EXISTENCE, Big Trouble in Little China:

Egg Shen: Look at what we have to work with.. Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.. it is like your salad bar; we take what we want and leave the rest.

I find it really helpful in dealing with my mormon beliefs and liberal leanings, actually

I don't think so!

I believe that you should believe what feels right in your heart (though with the caveat that you allow others to do the same). Prop 8 has got a lot of us very very angry because we see it as the church abusing it's powers and place in society for the purposes of abusing and taking the rights away from a minority. But Mormonism is more than that, just as it's more than polygamous marriages, and some of the more unsavory practices that result from that.

What I worry about is that people like you, the moderates of the church, will become excommunicated because there seems to be a wave of intolerance going on. The thing with Prop 8 stands out -- the fact that people mormons who felt compelled to support it, not because they believed in it, but because they felt they had to to be part of their church is testament that that the Church hierarchy is being very "all or nothing" in its approach to its own members.

I'm not even going to get into the hows and whys of what happened with prop 8, nor am I going to make excuses, as it's something that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. With that said, I do want to clarify that the church itself didn't donate money to support prop 8. They might have encouraged members to support the cause, but whether the members actually donated money boiled down to their individual choice in the matter. And even then, not all Mormons who were asked to support it did. Stereotypes are considered unfair for a reason.

People have been writing fics about Colbert and Stewart (with varying degrees of seriousness) for years. See [livejournal.com profile] fakenews_fanfic and [livejournal.com profile] tds_rps.

Well, I would assume it's been for years. And THANKS, BUT NO THANKS.

Lots of Colbert and Stewart fics. They tend to play on the personas (like Stephen Colbert the right wing batshit) instead of the actual men behind them.

Seriously, I was thinking the same thing, which actually made me laugh a little. But yeah, people do write about them, and that's all I know. I seriously hope their wives catch wind of it just so I can watch the fandom squirm like an earthworm farm.
