Cole's behavior didn't really come out of nowwhere. We saw plenty of smaller red flags. I remember one scene where Phoebe is sitting on her bed, folding what appears to be his underwear, (implying that she's one of those girls whose boyfriend got her to do his laundry) while he just watches. Then I compare that to scenes where Leo is clearly shown helping out around the house, and so is Darryl. In fact, Darryl is shown helping the Charmed Ones bring grocery bags into the house and he doesn't even live there.

The show wasn't great at subtlety but I feel like they were showing us "this is what a good man does" vs "see, this guy is already taking advantage of her".
