Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

I think there are some cultures that are compatible and some that aren't. Islam is not compatible with western society.

See, this kind of thing annoys me, because there is no one indivisible unchangeable Islam. That's partly true in the specific sense that there are a wide range of interpretations of Islam and denominations of Islam.

But it's also true in the sense that no religion is indivisible or unchanging. Every religion exists only to the extent that it is actually practiced and understood by specific people in a specific culture. And every religion can be massively changed based on the reactions of people within that society. So the idea that there's some unchangeable core of Islam that is incompatible with a given society is simply empirically wrong to me - Islam, like any other religion, becomes whatever people in a given society want it to be.

And in fact, the whole idea of saying that "X religion has Y quality" - I don't think that this is intellectually tenable in any circumstance at all. Because I don't really see what criteria you can use to judge that a given interpretation of a religion is correct, unless you believe in that religion yourself. You can talk about what is normatively true of a religion - for instance, I can talk about things that are true of mainstream Christianity as it actually exists in the world. But how can I say that one interpretation of Christianity is more correct or more Christian than another? I am not a Christian myself, so I think that all interpretations of Christianity are equally wrong, so how can I judge between them?

So the whole idea of saying Islam is not compatible with Western society is just ridiculous from the start for purely intellectual reasons.

First generation Islamic immigrants came to my country in Europe and worked their assessment off. Their kids are now proving to be a major problem because they believe anyone who isn't a Muslim is fair game to rape/deal drugs to/rob/exploit in general.

Saying that you don't like one specific group of Muslims is not evidence that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with Western values. It simply is not.

This. White people descended from white Christian colonialists, still benefiting from their stuff and, lets be honest, still in many ways not having removed all the racist, colonialist crap from their culture don't really have any leg to stand on in talking about any other culture's problems.

-Signed a white person who wants to promote change within her own culture and race and thinks fellow white people need to shut up about criticizing others

AYRT

What REALLY sticks in my craw is this bit

"rape/deal drugs to/rob/exploit in general"

Which is something white people do CONSTANTLY. We're having protests about it RIGHT NOW in the US!!!! Native Americans still get fucked over for religious sites and just homes! Flint is still a problem! But no, it's the damn dirty brown folk who's a problem.

100% agreed. But of course not only do we claim that POCs do drugs more, but we make the rules different based on the drugs we think they use vs. the drugs we think white people use.

Oh god! That's awful!

There you were living in a utopia with no crime then those filthy Muslims showed up and ruined everything. You guys didn't even have words for things like rape, drugs, theft and exploitation before those nasty dark skin people immigrated to your perfect society.

You poor thing.

*rolls eyes so hard it hurts*

What society do you think would be compatible with Islam, any examples?

No liberal minded societies are but I feel that way about all religions.

+1 although I would call far leftism a religion in its own right at this point

*signed, someone who doesn’t understand religion.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

My understanding of religion: a set of dogmatic beliefs deemed unquestionable by a group of people, with those expressing opposition being dismissed as heretics and forced through societal pressure to either apologize and step back in line or be shamed and ostracized.

I will offer you more respect than you've offered me in appreciating that your understanding of the term might differ.

AYRT—I’m an atheist and without belief in some kind of deity or supernatural elements, what you described may suck, but it’s not religion. Just society and culture intersecting in shitty ways.
