This explains it far better than I can: https://youtu.be/v4amCfVbA_c

Do I agree with the looting/arson and screwing over those just trying to get by? No. But from what I gather, the looting is what's left when all other options have been exhausted. People need to be listened to, especially while they're being peaceful.

This. They tried kneeling, they were told they were being unpatriotic. They march, they get beaten and tear-gassed. They make speeches or sing about this stuff, they're told to "shut up and stick to their day jobs/quit bringing politics/race into everything". And so on.

So when you shut down all avenues of peaceful expression, what the hell else is left? Plus, when you've had to deal with this shit day in and day out for decades on end, when you see the same footage over and over of police officers abusing and shooting black people, and when you've got police beating on you and tear-gassing you, after a while, you're just done being polite.

I'd also note that some of the looting and rioting isn't even being done by protesters, but by outsider far-right agitators trying to weaken the legitimacy of the protests and make the protesters look bad. Most of the protesters have actually been non-violent.

My main thing is that I find the "tsk tsk, how dare they loot and destroy property" complaints especially obnoxious when they're coming from politicians or police officers, or pundits who are defending the politicians and police officers. It's awfully rich for them to demand people follow the laws when they're breaking plenty of laws themselves and refusing to be held accountable for any of their crimes, or excusing and justifying their crimes. If the people in power aren't obeying and peacefully enforcing the laws and rules, they don't get to act all shocked when the citizens wind up behaving similarly.

NAYRT—I’m sure some looting is being done by fed up black people, fairly sure given the documented police bs like tire slashing that some was done by police, at least the initial window smashing, and... there are a bunch of young white guys, teens mostly, who come hang out on my block and smoke weed and throw empty beer bottles in my bushes. One night I was watering my garden and overheard one— “Hey, we should go.”

“Protests are stupid.”

“Yeah, but afterwards, we could go looting!”

So I’m sure some of it is also bored white kids who would face way fewer consequences if caught than black people who’ve been denied any more constructive way to protest and basically aren’t allowed to benefit from the social contract.
