138. I SO TOTALLY HAD THE SAME REACTION, particularly to America's glasses. And why is America a GUY? Shouldn't he be a GIRL? We call America 'her' and 'she', so I was confused, but now I'm okay with the designs thanks to the artwork of

halcyonjazz, who draws them like REAL MEN.
I didn't change my mind about the glasses until I found out the represent Texas. Because Texas isn't like the rest of America, it's kind of apart from America, so it's just a prop instead of his body ... yeeeeeeeah it makes sense after you think about it for a bit? ... tl;dr I know.

149. Holy shit, you are SO NOT ALONE. I pretty much have to fastforward or mute any scenes where a character is embarrassed or humiliated or about to make a fool of him/herself. I always feel literal pain in my chest, so, um, if you're pathetic, so am I.

Calling countries "she" is an English poetic convention, though. All nations and ships are referred to in the feminine. The Japanese probably don't know that, or if they do, they don't care.

But there are countries that are referred to in the masculine, though - Germany comes to mind. I'm thinking more 'does [the nation's populace] refer to its homeland as a girl or guy?'

Of course in Japan they don't have 3rd person gender pronouns, so.

Well, Germany was "the Fatherland" for a time there, yes, but, um, I'm not sure if many of them use it anymore, because of, well, certain associations from history...

*nods* yeah ..

Eh, regardless, my reaction to America being portrayed as a guy was more of a gut reaction I had back before I knew what Hetalia was, really. By the time I got 'into' the series, so to speak, I was pretty much fine with everyone's gender.

I know know about you, but they look like men in the original art as well. You know all of them being stocky and all. Hell, calling them bishounen is sort of a stretch.

Funnily enough even if we make America a girl in songs. The official national anthropomorphic of America, Uncle Sam, is a guy. Before Sam, Brother Jonathan. But it's not unusual for a country go either way.

Ah, don't get me wrong - I don't think they're particularly 'bishounen' in the traditional sense (and most of them would be 'beseinen' anyway if we're going to get technical). However, 'bishounen' seems to be the way many people refer to men drawn in the moe style and I think that's what the OP was trying to get at here. My only problem with the art is that I have a hard time telling people apart a lot of the time and everything is very sketchy, but it's clearly a webcomic the artist does in his spare time so I'm not looking for beautiful stuff or anything. I just know that I particularly liked the idea of America as a male when Chira started drawing him.

True enough, re: american icons. Didn't even think of that!

Mm, but was Florida its own nation when it was annexed by the US? I'm pretty sure that Texas holds that distinction.
