112) So, let me get this straight, you can't like the story because Sou isn't gay enough? Or because Mashiro is a gender confused and bisexual rather than completely and contentedly transgendered and gay. Frankly, I like the very thing that bothers you -- that it's not cut and dried that Mashiro is a man in a woman's body, that Sou is not just a cold-hearted creep who is sleeping with anything female that will bed him, that nearly all of our expectations will eventually be debunked. To me it's a thesis on just how complicated and difficult to categorize people really are. Thank god it wasn't simplified into a simple statement about Sou and Mashiro OTP.

My thought is that when they graduate, Sou, Mashiro and Kureha will do it together -- as friends, because this is about learning to love oneself, not about finding someone to love.

I'm very tired, but I thought the story ended with Mashiro ending up as a woman and that's what OP is pissed about, because it was totally against what he thought of himself.

Fuck, I totally walked into that spoiler.....

And it isn't Mashiro thought he was a guy, it was more that he tried to NOT be a woman (the fact the story began with the idea that man had it better in life, which was sorta true in Japan). He was living a fantasy of trying to become the perfect man, acting like a prince and such.

But at the same thing, it felt that it was trying to deconstruct Mashiro's dated views on gender roles.

Crap, now I have to find it and finish it before I get more spoiled on it.

I figured he'd end up as a woman, since that really is what he was, and he had over romanticised notions of what it was like to be male and was rejecting his femininity. He was basically called out on the guyness fairly early on, and rather than defend that part of himself, he was working on accepting being female, because he wasn't as completely gender dysmorphic as he thought he was. Like everyone else in the whole series, he was trying to live being something he was not.

I assume you are talking about chapter 10, which hasn't come out yet, so I'm somewhat spoiled.

I don't care about the gay, honestly. I love slash and yes, at first I thought it was a novel idea, but then, the one thing I shipped at first was Mashiro/Kureha because the whole relationship with Sou made me uncomfortable, with Sou insisting that 'oh, I love her so she has to be a woman', and frankly, up until volume five, I think it was (which is when i had to stop reading because the point of making me uncomfortable) I wasn't quite shipping anything.

I also liked that it wasn't set in stone what it was, the idea of growth it showed. But by the point I got in and I had to stop, it read as if the only reason why Mashiro was thinking about 'actually being a girl' was so that 'he' could be with Sou. If there had been hints at all that he had had doubts about, perhaps, not being a man, perhaps it would have been different, but up to the point where I was, he had always thought of him as a man.

I really, honestly don't care about OTP's. I _like_ more the representation of Female Mashiro we were shown more than I like Mashiro. I celebrated when Kureha finished things with Mashiro because it was showing her strength not as a 'woman', but as a person. But with Mashiro, so far, it seems the one reason he has to consider being a woman is 'because everyone is telling him to be one' and 'so he can be with Sou'.

And that's what it continues on to be: About Mashiro deciding if it he wants to be a woman or not, and honestly, although Sou is there, I don't think it makes that much of a difference. He isn't exploring the idea of being a woman because of Sou -- though he is looking for some confirmation that he's acceptable as a woman from Sou. He's trying on the role of female to see if it's okay because ultimately he's tried being a guy and found it lacking.

Oh, and also: With Sou it bothered me that the ONE reason why he was sure that Mashiro was a girl was because 'he was straight and he didn't fall in love with men'. THAT bothered me not because of the gay, but because it seemed that the ONE justification then for Mashiro deciding to be a girl was because Sou was saying so.

It made me uncomfortable not because of the gay: the gay is the least important thing. It made me uncomfortable because for me it read as if it said that every single problem a transgendered person might have would get better once they found 'true love'.

Yeah, I didn't read this as a sign of what all transgendered people must do. For me all these people were treated as individuals rather than stereotypes and that was part of the appeal. None of them fit in neat packages. None of them fit comfortably in society. Sou needed Mashiro to be a girl for reasons that had to do with his own complex back issues. Mashiro flirted with men other than Sou. In the end they seemed to be fufilling their own needs more than trying to fill each others -- and that's one of the things that Kureha calls Mashiro out on: That he was playing to prince not to support her, but to feed his own ego, regardless of if she or any of the others needed it.
