102. Why does everyone who says, "I ship personalities, not gender" ship only slash pairings?

Maybe because we're fucking tired of having to defend our ships?

I ship a lot of femslash, just because. I like it, and yeah, I admit that my femslash ships at one point outnumbered my het ships (I think they're probably tied now). And yeah, maybe the trend says something about me. But I never, ever shipped two characters just because they were both the same gender. I shipped them because I thought they'd be awesome pairings.

So maybe you hear that response from slashers because its easier than getting into the same tired conversation every time.

We don't. One of my favourite pairings of all times is Mr. Darcy/Elizabeth from "Pride and Prejudice". Of course, I don't write fanfic about them, and I think that's the case with a lot of popular het-ships. The reason for that is that canon did it in such an awesome way that we feel no need to write fic for it. There is incredible amounts of well-written and plotted het in published fiction, so most of us get our fill of it that way.

There is also the fact that male characters outnumber the female characters in most media to the extent that almost all the interesting dynamic is between male characters. And let's not forget that most female characters get no character development whatsoever, making them static and uninteresting.

I mean, one of the most popular het couples ever that wasn't canon (at least not for a long time, at least) was Mulder/Scully from the X-files; they had the sort of dynamic that ficcers and shippers love, but that is most often denied female characters.
