So much to say today...
128 - You know, some of those fans are the same people. And some of them are converts from one fandom to the other (sadly to say, some are converts FROM Harry Potter TO Twilight, which I just can't comprehend. At least Harry Potter was COHERENT.)
129 - I heard CivWar ended with Iron Man's "side" winning. Hearing that made me go "WTF MARVEL!?" because yes, things can always go crappy in a comic universe, but what kind of message were they trying to send? What kind of world were they trying to create? Are they just setting themselves up for a magnanimous retcon in the (hopefully) not-so-distant future? It's because of mindfucks like these that I can't read comics as often as I used to.
130 - Me neither.
149 - Oh, me neither. I wail on behalf of the characters sometimes. Sometimes if a character gets truly humiliated, I'll even be humiliated too. It's quite a funny (and weird) feeling.
160 - Yikes, you're scaring me from my inevitable fic hunt. I'm mostly with you on your points, OP... I do like Mac/Stella romance, but so much of it tends to butcher Stella's character, because inevitably her "weakness(es)" has/have to be showcased. So I haven't gone searching for it in a while, and as I'm watching (and catching up with; I'm new to the fandom), I think: "If Mac/Stella became canon, it might ruin them for me, but I still don't like the thought of either of them with anyone else." It's not that I don't want their characters to be happy, I just think they're better suited for each other as "pillars of support" than anyone else. If you take out the sexual element, they already act like married couple most of the time.
161 - Wow, lots of CSI: NY secrets today, mm? Or at least I think this one's CSI: NY. In any case, I'm new to the fandom, and I'd love a guide! It sucks that your friends are jumping ship, but the appeal of CSI is that it always brings new people in, and... well, I'm one of them! So don't think of it totally as a lost cause. What's that old nursery rhyme-- "make new friends, and keep the old (ones)?" Yeah, I'm a cheeseball tonight. :P
164 - I use OTP to reference the folks up in my icon, Seto Kaiba x Anzu Mazaki. But were you to ask me who my OTP was, oh, 10 years ago, when Yu-Gi-Oh! had yet to be dubbed and brought to the States, I'd have answered "Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba from Sailor Moon." But tastes change. I still like Usagi and Mamoru, but now I ALSO ship Usagi x Seiya-- which hardly makes Usagi x Mamoru my OTP anymore, does it? So you CAN have a "new" OTP if, for some reason, you don't feel the "true" in your old OTP anymore, right? Plus, I think you can have OTPs in different fandoms. Seto x Anzu is just mine for the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom, but I have different ones for other fandoms-- that's not a crime, right? Unless my tastes change, I see myself liking those pairings LOOOONG into the future, hence the "OTP" label right now.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-08 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)At the risk of compromising my anonymity, I am totally planning to do a meta on why Mac and Stella have such an interesting relationhsip and why it is better that it doesn't become romantic in canon. (I honestly can't see them ever making it canonical.) I have problems with the phrase "married couple," though, because it's a subjective idea. But you have the basic idea right--Mac and Stella have a deep bond. I don't think that bond has anything to do with sex or romance. The thing is, no matter who else they do or don't have a romantic relationship with, no matter what other friends they make, they're still going to be one of the most important people in the other's life, period.
Have you seen S3? I was a little worried about the relationship between Mac and Peyton, but the writers knocked it out of the park by writing a complicated adult relationship.
I don't know. I don't want the show for romance, I don't want any romance in it, but I'm perfectly willing to accept it if it's well done.
(From my own personal experience, I think if Mac and Stella were to move into a sexual relationship, nothing would actually change between them than, oh, they're having sex too, but I wouldn't expect canon to get that right. I wouldn't expect any mainstream narrative outlet to get that right.)
With 161, the problem is how many new fans--well, okay, how many *vocal* new fans--are not people I would want to be friends with. For example, they're all over Angell, even though she doesn't have a personality. I mean, I don't dislike Angell, I don't have any feelings toward her at all. I can't because she doesn't have a personality.

I've seen most of S3, I think (Almost everything I've seen of the show so far is via re-runs and the new episodes starting this season). I didn't like Peyton at first, but I do appreciate how the writers did make it complex-- after all, PEOPLE are complex, not cardboard cutouts.
As for me, I've seen Angell in all of *2* episodes (that I can distinctly remember). One was the one where Flack kissed her, the other was where he was flirting with her. Both of those eps tell me more about Flack than about Angell, so while I won't argue that there's apparently SOME sort of thing there, I don't know what Flack sees in her because, as you said, she has no personality.
