"Race" is defined by totally superficial characteristics.
Gender? NOT SO MUCH.
[Insert blah-de-blah arguments in here about how Time Lord genetics are totally rearranged every time, etc., and completely ignoring self-identification. Not to mention the fact that a humanoid Doctor is based on our genetic limitations to begin with ANYWAY - seen a Doctor with tentacles yet? Guess those genetics aren't TOTALLY rearranged.]
Yes, I AM deeply offended by people who think that changing sex is something that could BELIEVABLY happen with a snap of the fingers. (Or a regeneration.) Those of us who are actually doing it can testify otherwise. It's not even really so much that changing sex is totally inconceivable in a universe with shape-shifting aliens; it's more that the people who propose it act like it would be nothing, just because they want their Strong Female Character. BARF.
I don't know about you, but I've never read a book where that happened and it didn't RUIN THE ENTIRE FUCKING STORY; mainly because there was no thought put into the change at all. Most often, it just comes off as fetishistic. I doubt this would be any different. If that happened, unless it was done REALLY well, I'd have to jump ship in disgust.
(And do you REALLY want a straight male showrunner in charge of THAT series anyway? Oh god, how awful would that be? It would be all, "Woo, the Doctor has tits! Now my pseudo-sexual obsession with him can be justified!" There's just so, so many ways this could go wrong here.)
I do have SOME sympathy that there cannot be an awesome female Time Lord in the new series, because, oh yeah, the Time Lords got killed off. Whoops!
But you'd rather have a female Doctor than a black one?

Admittedly, I am not changing sex, but I can't imagine anything worse than being stuck in the wrong body for who I am and I know that this happens to people, that they get born in bodies as wrong for them as mine is right for me, and it's not just something you can be okay with. Also, it's canon that people regenerate as the same gender.
