Wait, they don't at least say so in canon? I've been seeing them from an outside perspective and just assumed I'm missing obvious context.

If they have, I’ve forgotten it. Maybe it’s in one of the character profiles in the manga.

Killua somewhat implies it by saying Gon is the only other kid he's seen. It's subtle, but it did push everyone else to be 16+ in my mind back when I first read it.
