Given all the genuinely intelligent people I know thought the show was actually good (though flawed) when it was new, I think it's more overanalyzing in hindsight that makes everyone think it could never be seen as a smart show. OP thought it was so bad it's good because the perception that it's bad is so ubiquitous now that "so bad it's good" is the best anyone's preconceived notions will make of it.
