(Anonymous) 2020-07-02 10:01 am (UTC)(link)If the person has spent a lot of time in fandoms where betas were treated as borderline-obligatory, they probably feel, on some level, like they'd doing something wrong or controversial by not using one, and thus they have the impulse to lampshade the fact that they didn't use one.
I totally get it. My first major fandom was an old fandom that took itself quite seriously, and had a very "writer's workshop" attitude towards fanfic writing--as though fanfic writers were all aspiring authors using fanfic to hone their skills and it was their responsibility to really make the most of it. If that's been your experience with fandom, then of course you want to preemptively acknowledge your lack of beta and head criticism off at the pass.
