Fans become advertisers for their fandoms by purposefully and in coordination with others:
getting tags or tweets trending on twitter (a well known version was when SPN got #LuciferRising trending and got mainstream news channels to cover it because everyone went wtf is this);
purposefully rewatching videos on all devices to get them on the front page of Youtube or break count records;
spamming tags, comment sections, or voting systems, etc.
Some are even used for the power of good, like kpop stans spamming that white power hashtag on twitter recently.
