It stays because George Lucas created it and worked on it and hadn't disowned it when Disney bought Lucasfilm. That's it. It's that simple.

And it was always intended to be canon whereas the EU was always intended to not be canon. It is just that they never made a big deal about it and allowed the fandom to continue with their "almost canon" and "canon as long as it doesn't contradict the movies" ideas until Disney bought things. But Lucas was always clear that in fact the EU wasn't canon.
