(Anonymous) 2020-07-05 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)I completely agree!
My personal opinion is that the problem is an overall lack of good judgment and prudence and understanding of nuance and sensibleness, and an excess of alarmism and fearmongering that's encouraged by the design of social media. I don't think it's really a problem of intellectual principle or ultimate values or a lack of commitment to a theoretical ideal of free speech; it is a bunch of personal failings and bad group dynamics, massively exacerbated by the bad structure of the current Internet media landscape. Note that none of this behavior is really limited to one particular ideological group.
And so I think treating it as an ideological problem of censorship versus free speech is bad because it doesn't get to the actual root of the problem. And also, the existing groups that want to turn it into an ideological problem of political correctness threatening free speech are generally bad and hypocritical and have largely adopted the anti-political-correctness orientation as a platform to promulgate their own social and political views, which I strongly disagree with and which I think most people should disagree with, so you find yourself on the same side as a lot of shitty people fighting for dumb things anyway.
