Probably because they're standard young people that care what others think of them and haven't quite reached the stage where they're too old for this shit.

Not that there's anything wrong with caring about being a good person or not harming others! Unfortunately listening to every random voice about how to do that instead of deciding for yourself what that means to you, leads to caring more about others perceiving you to be a good person than just being a decent person
