I feel the same way when I'm reading a book and a character is supposed to be an amazing writer and the examples then given are... not.

It actually put me off of Mira Grant's "Feed" series half way through the first book because the main character is a supposedly great reporter, sought after by powerful people for her talents, and the articles in the book read like Enquirer excerpts.
