Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2020-07-05 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)Much as I loved Hugo Weaving as V in V for Vendetta, I feel like they missed a chance to cast a Black or Pakistani or Indian actor, preferably one who was also British. Or maybe a trans man, not that he couldn’t be both a POC and trans.
I think an Irish or Eastern European actor would’ve worked too, for a British audience, but it wouldn’t have had the same impact for Americans. Since the audience never sees enough of V to determine his race or ethnicity, I guess it doesn’t matter from an in-universe standpoint, but still.

He may have been Valerie in the comics. The government manufactured plague was invented for the film adaptation; in the comics, the scientists were doing hormone research, iirc one woman's autopsy reveals she's growing a hand and fingers in her leg.
The scientist V kills whose journal is left for the police to find mentions lesbians, black women, and a Jamaican immigrant, but not specifically Indians or Pakistanis. They're just groups that have come in for a lot of racist shit in the UK over the years.
His face is never shown, Evey at one point imagines him as a Black man. V sings a song about there being "No queers or Yids or darkies" left in Britain, so I suppose he may also have been Jewish.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)But if he was a straight white dude, he must've done something to piss the government off. Maybe just mocked them, since he may have been an actor. But it doesn't follow that his backstory was that he was a straight white dude just because Weaving is (I think? I don't know anything much about him.)

(Anonymous) 2020-07-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)But also, I think the identity of V before he became V is not very important to the overall piece, and I don't think that casting a minority actor would have added anything (or, indeed, taken it away).
