When did Aspergers become so popular on the laundry list of mental illnesses kiddies on the internet claim to have? While I agree with [livejournal.com profile] velvet_mace and [livejournal.com profile] khandreia... The people that are lying to excuse their crappy behavior- when did this become a trend to use this as an excuse? D: I mean what fanwank started it? I mean I understand that fandom and obession and all that fits and in hand.. it's prefect for someone who has Aspergers.. (or someone who's '9_6 dur hur social life what?' like me)

But even I would feel a lot more comfortable at home doodling FMA fan art then in a huge room/convention filled with FMA fans. I'd probably shit myself from my social ftftftft-ness. 8|

..Seriously as someone who was actually diagnosed with something (nobody's business) it irritates the shit out of me when I see kids on the internet using any kind of disorder to be a jerk. I mean... come on. Pick something unique... I wanna see somebody claim to have Crohn's disease or something.

SHIT YEAH. Celiac disease or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or some such.

[identity profile] driftwoodwings.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Or IBS. 83

"SORRY I KEEP AFKING. I NEED TO KEEP RUNNING TO THE BATHROOM. MY ASS KEEPS EXPLODING! I HAVE IBS LOL!"

[identity profile] foofighter0234.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Or Restless Leg Syndrome 83

"OMG MY LEG CAN'T STOP TWITCHING OMFG HALP."

[identity profile] kalldoro.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I have both IBS and Restless Leg Syndrome. That amused me like mad. :P

[identity profile] kalldoro.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be sorry, I'm genuinely amused :)

Self Diagnoased PCOS! Yay!

[identity profile] ennalyra.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, It's medically confirmed.
It kinda sucks.
But not eating real bread is TOTALLY worth not getting cancer.

[identity profile] westly-roanoke.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Mine's self-diagnoased/half medically diagnoased. (Meaning doctor says "You probably have PCOS" as I was morphined up for my gall bladder out. She was running her fingers through my leg hair, it was really, really weird.)

Waiting on an appointment for conformation!

[identity profile] ennalyra.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, god.
That would be awkward.
Thank god I don't have leg hair.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea, but it's a trend that's been around for years, at least. I think it started with kids who were a bit emo or goth claiming to have depression, then went to kids who occasionally - gasp - change emotions claiming to have bipolar, to kids with vivid imaginations having schizophrenia, to kids who occasionally get a bit spacey having ADD, to, finally, kids who are a bit crap at small talk claiming to have Aspergers.

It absolutely infuriates me, especially with my family history - my grandfather had bipolar (wrongly diagnosed as depression, wrongly treated, resulted in suicide when I was six), my Mum has depression (properly diagnosed, has been treated with antidepressants for the last twenty years), two of my siblings have ADD (properly diagnosed, treated with concerta, change has been amazing), and I have Aspergers (properly diagnosed). Oh, and my sister has struggled with dyslexia her entire life - but she's worked HARD to overcome that and it certainly isn't the result of being too lazy to spell correctly!

So yeah...probably tl;dr, and my family's messed up, but this is actual life-affecting stuff. It's not just a diagnosis you slap on to explain a personality quirk!

(And yeah, it's always the SAME stuff. I dunno, someone claim to have IBS or type two diabetes or something!)

[identity profile] foofighter0234.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
My family's fucked up, too.

Pretty much everyone on both sides has some sort of anxiety disorder, a few have ADD/ADHD (Strattera and Concerta are GOD ON A STICK), I have Asperger's (although I'm suspecting my Aunt might have it, too), one of my cousins had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (and committed suicide as a result), so I completely empathize with what you're coming from.

[identity profile] driftwoodwings.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry about your grandfather :( I too was treated/wrongly diagnosed with depression all through-out High School and it was utter and complete hell. Years later what I really have showed it's ugly face full force, thankfully I was able to get it treated and know now how to cope with what I have.

...As someone who actively has to fight this almost every day and avoid places/things/whatever to avoid triggers. It makes me so mad when kids use any kind of condition as an excuse. Some of us HAVE to cope/deal with things every day. Some of us spend 100s or 1000s on therapy, treatment, and medication.. And.. heh, I'd gladly hand over my heart palpitations, chest pains, nausea, nightmares-ect when confronted with a trigger any day to a kid who wants to have a condition to bitch about or use as an excuse for whatever.. (/vent)
I was not born this way, it was just something that developed because of some crap I went though, but I'm a survivor :3. And to people who are born with something.. have my deepest sympathies <3 .o.
e.e Sorry I soap boxed.

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Internet Tourettes, yo!

[identity profile] kalldoro.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's like someone a little short saying they have primordial dwarfism.

Yeah, it's truly annoying. I have one brother with Aspergers and another one who is something similar with traces of just about everything (tourettes, ADHD, epilepsi) and even at 15 and 20 they both need a lot of support and help.

I'm somewhat socially inept and I've gone through the whole system but only ever been diagnosed with depression and a trace of Avoidant Personality Disorder. Basically I'm introverted and insecure.

It's amazing how people never seem to be able to take responsibility for themselves. They're so ready to lay the blame elsewhere so they can be free to be idiots.

Ironically, the only person I've ever known who had Crohn's was a complete bitch, but I don't think it had anything to do with the disease tho.
