The way I see it, there's stuff that's just not funny, period. I just can't laugh about say, the way the Polish army used cavalry against German tanks, to say nothing of the systematic murder of hundreds of thousands of people during and after WWII, etc. However, this doesn't mean that I see all this unfunny stuff when I look at anything that has something to do with history. I don't say "HOLOCAUST!!" whenever I look at the iron cross or a Messerschmitt plane, or "GULAG!" or "1956!" (I'm Hungarian) when I look at the red star or a Soviet tank. (Unlike many, many of my countrymen who apparently can't understand that the USSR is no more and we're not in danger of becoming a satellite state again - so they still think that Russia is still out to get us and that all socialists are really communists in disguise. Okay, ~50 years of ingrained thinking is hard to change, but still, why do they feel it's necessary to pass it on to the younger generations? Or the whole Trianon business. Yes, it was horrible back in the day, yes, it got us into WWII, yes, it still affects us even today, but mostly because people just can't get the fuck over it.)

As you said, people have been making fun of these things and events even during it happened, there were jokes about the war during the war, there were jokes about Stalin and show trials and whatnot, etc. etc. I think it's important to learn and remember, and it's very sad to see people, especially young people stuck in the past so much that they can't distance themselves from it to view it objectively and maybe even laugh at it.

Or, eh, something like that. Sorry for ranting. =_= (It's past midnight over here and I'm still supposed to be working...)
