I don't know if you've seen it, but this is what the New Yorker had to say: "As they camp out, it becomes apparent that the brothers are bound together by incestuous desire as well--a fact that frightens Addison, whereas to Wilson it's just part of their relationship, extra money in the pleasure bank." (http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/theatre/2008/12/01/081201crth_theatre_als)

I'm not sure I entirely agree with them; I think that Addison didn't even consciously acknowledge the incestuous aspect of their relationship. But it was there.

I...tend to somewhat divorce Sondheim characters from their historical counterparts. I mean, the cast of Assassins practically dripped slashiness when I went to see the revival, and that's just wrong. Anyway, it's perfectly possible to acknowledge that the Mizner brothers relationship has Deep Symbolic Meaning as a cynical commentary on the enmeshment of the noble American spirit of innovation and the predatory American spirit of commercialism and greed...while also thinking that it's so gay and totally shippy. Because it does and it is.

I did see that review, and it seemed an odd interpretation. To me, it seemed more like Addison, as you say, wasn't consciously aware of it, while Wilson was aware of it and played on it to get Addy on his side. Although... man, I wish I could see it again. I have a feeling there may have been a point where that shifted and Addison did become aware and somewhat disturbed, but I can't remember details.

*grin* Yeah, Sondheim and Weidman aren't exactly careful with history. Which is the best way to do it, of course. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

And I just love the fact that I can squee over both the Serious Intellectual Themes and the totally sweet gay subtext, and not feel that I'm reading too much into it in either case.
