[The Chicks, Taylor Swift]

(Anonymous) 2020-07-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
On the one hand I remember them calling out Bush Jr. back in the day and I like that they were outspoken, and it sucks that they were hated on for that. On the other hand, I just don't like their music other than maybe one or two songs whereas I like quite a lot of Taylor's music.

+1000000

If this secret had just said The Dixie Chicks didn't deserve to have their musical careers stomped into the dirt for stating their political convictions, I would be one thousand percent in agreement.

Bringing Taylor Swift into it doesn't really make sense to me. I mean, saying that one artist deserves to have the success of another artist is almost never an argument I feel like getting behind. What makes a piece of music good is already incredibly subjective on it's own. And then add to it the question of what it even means to "deserve success." IDK, it's just not really a meaningful argument to me.

Sure. So does Taylor.

They are not even in the same circles. What a weird comparison except I guess that is that anon obsessed with Taylor Swift.

Didn't they release a song together last year?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
The song you're thinking of is Taylor Swift's 'Soon You'll Get Better' feat. The Chicks.

It's about Taylor's reaction to her Mom's cancer diagnosis and it's haunting.

They featured on a track off her latest album. It's good, in a deeply sad, not-gonna-listen-to-this-very-often sort of way.

Doesn't make her success relevant to the The Dixie Chicks' situation, though (if that's someone you're suggesting; I can't really tell. If it's not something you're suggesting then please disregard).

I'm one of the anons who's a fan of hers, and it's definitely not my secret. This seems more like someone who dislikes her to me.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-09 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, Taylor Swift is really tall.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-09 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
She's 5'11" while Natalie Maines is 5'3".

It was odd that a lot of the people complaining that The Chicks are victims of cancel culture and bullying are the ones who cancelled them back in the 00s.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of us were likely against their cancelling but couldn't do anything against Republiturds and their loud, Toby Keith-loving, cheating song-guzzling asses, fake-patriot and Confederate-flag-waving asses.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
They did own the primary forms of music distribution at the time. Literally as in "the largest owners of the radio spectrum were Republicans." One thing I will credit Apple for is that disrupting that market has generated a revival of country that's not feel-good advertising for trucks, dogs, beer, and tight blue jeans.

I like The Chicks music more than Swifts but that doesn't mean she isn't a hard working person who deserves where she is at in her career. The Chicks deserve a much better career but that doesn't mean someone else should lose theirs.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-09 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. No one handed Taylor Swift anything and her business success is her own.

That said, the Chicks deserve at least as good a career as Swift has since they can write and sing.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Swift made her career on the backs of her breakups.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
So? Lots of artists have sung about ended relationships. She still did the singing.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
So, like half the artists (and definitely more than half the country musicians) in the world? Good for her.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-10 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
You mean she uses her personal experiences to inspire her song writing? What a hack. Good thing none of the other song writers in the biz do that.

The Dixie Chicks always sucked and changing their name in a bid to get PR won't change that. It's so nakedly craven and self-interested for them to do this now instead of any moment before.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-11 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
They were pretty beloved in their day I thought?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-26 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
They were, but unfortunately a lot of their fans were die hard Republicans who basically cancelled them when they said something negative about Bush. Their music career never truly recovered but at least they never went back on their words, the song "not ready to make nice" kinda encapsulates how they felt about that incident.
