Why have you been advised against invisalign? My mom is just finishing up hers, and has been really happy with the result. I had the traditional, old-school metal braces in middle school (20 years ago) and it was awful. Excruciating pain and constant headaches. Would absolutely not recommend unless your teeth are really messed up to the point that it's like interfering with your life/eating or something. (I found out years later that in my case it wasn't even necessary, the dentist/orthodontist were just sleazy and wanted to make money off me, and my mom didn't know any better. Although maybe if you actually do need them it wouldn't be so painful, IDK.)

Yeah, the fact that you were in constant pain is definitely linked to the fact that the braces were unnecessary, and probably to incompetence as well as assholery on the part of the dentist. Braces usually hurt some when they're first put in and immediately after adjustment, but if it's extremely painful or your mouth is tender for more than a couple days, something's wrong and should be fixed immediately.
