I think most of us are unconcerned because we're already poor. What are they going to do? Take our non-existent money? I'm shaking in my Payless boots. :P

If you're poor, that means you have some money. You can always be poorer, and relying upon the goodwill and generosity of corporations isn't really a good idea.

relying upon the goodwill and generosity of corporations isn't really a good idea.

Who said anything about goodwill and generosity. AYRT is talking about relying on their greed and common sense. Even in a situation where an IP owner did have legal grounds to sue for IP infringement (which in the majority of cases they don't), they would be doing it at great personal expense. It would cost them a lot of money to go through the process of suing, and even if the verdict came out in their favor, the compensation they'd stand to receive would be next to nothing.

If a corporation sues an individual for infringing on their IP, it'll be because the corporation fears that the infringement being committed is harmful to the IP's profitability, or because they fear that allowing the infringement to go unchecked will create a precedent whereby their claim on the IP may be placed into question in the future.

Basically, they're not suing you because YOU made money off their IP. The money you made is so small they wouldn't even bend down to pick it up off the sidewalk. They're suing you because they're worried that allowing you to make money off of their IP may in some way jeopardize their ability to profit to the fullest possible extent off of their IP.

So don't jeopardize their ability to profit to the fullest possible extent off of their IP, and they almost certainly won't sue you, because the effort of doing so would cost them tens of thousands of dollars minimum.

I'm not worried for myself as someone with a handful of fics up. I'm worried that if fandom starts monetizing that the lawyers will come down on Dreamwidth or AO3 like they did with youtube. And the most likely result will be that those sites will start doing their own censorship to avoid costly litigation.

Well, AO3 probably won't. Their whole thing is letting people post any kind of fanfic without fear of repercussion, so they'd fight something like that as hard as they can.

Though they're pretty firmly against monetization of fanfic too, at least on AO3 itself.

AYRT: I don't have faith that AO3 can afford the kinds of extended legal warfare that IP organizations have used to force concessions from Google and Apple.

I can't though? I'm on a fixed government assistance payment that's below minimum wage and I have no assets. There's nothing for them to garnish or repossess.
