And there are not dragons, but CJ Cherryh's 'Fortress' series is an excellent, well-built, very well character-ed high fantasy series.

However - the love interest (if it's the princess-becomes-queen), she's awesome in her own right. I totally see them as a threesome in my head. :D

Good world building and character development are all my style, but not if everything else is the same sorry rehash someone else perfected a long, long, time ago,
