Ha, I am so with you on this, OP.

Too picky IMO, as I don't think it matters whether the worldbuilding works or not as long as it's fun and interesting

This secret was based on my comment. By work I guess I mean it has to at least make some kind of sense. I don't need every aspect of it to completely work. But if it falls apart with even a surface read and doesn't make any sense, I'm thrown out of the story and can't engage with it at all. If I can't get invested and put myself in the world of what I'm reading I can't really have any fun reading it.

nayrt - I agree with you. I'm not asking for perfect world building, but so many people barely put in the effort at all. At least... write something that makes sense? That doesn't seem like too much to ask.

This this this. There has got to be some *logic* to it all.
And there are not dragons, but CJ Cherryh's 'Fortress' series is an excellent, well-built, very well character-ed high fantasy series.

IMO the only logic that matters is narrative logic

Well, that is definitely an opinion.

CJ Cherryh is great. Someone here, probably you, recced her to me, and I've loved everything I've read of her so far.

Heee, probably. I'm glad you enjoyed!

awww I was waiting for the prince and the mage to kiss in the first book but the prince suddenly got a love interest in the end

I knoooooooooooooooooow!!
However - the love interest (if it's the princess-becomes-queen), she's awesome in her own right. I totally see them as a threesome in my head. :D

I thoroughly loved both trilogies and was utterly heartbroken at the end of the first trilogy.

Of course, I was also a teenager, so I don't know that they'd still hold up for me, some 20 years later. I think it's time for a reread.

Um. There are only five books in this series, not sure if we're talking about the same books? CJ Cherryh's 'Fortress' series is the one I was talking about.....

Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince trilogies was what I was referring to (The secret is the cover of Sunrunner's Fire).

Sorry about that. I mixed up where my reply was meant to go.

Are there only 5 books? I could have sworn there were more...

I know I'm missing Fortress of Owls. I have Time, Eagles and Dragons.

Ah, no worries! Sometimes i hit the wrong 'reply', too.

There is Time, Eagles, Owls, Dragons, and Ice, in that order.

Ice! That's the other one I'm missing!

Need to remedy that.

Yes! It's an excellent wrap-up of the series, though, as with most Cherryh, I could read forever.

She's good at that. The Dreaming Tree is one of my favs by her.}:)

[personal profile] tabaqui 2020-07-16 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yessssss. :D I had to take a second, 'cause I only ever knew that as two separate books, and so the title always confuses me for a second.

I only ever disliked two of her books, out of the dozens she's written; i'd say that's a pretty good record.

My other favs are her Morgaine Cycle quartet. I actually read Exile's Gate first, before I found out there were three books before it.

Oh, wow. :D
I read 'Gate of Ivrel' without knowing there were more for ages - it was so awesome to find the rest!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think I agree with that, I just think that's mostly a result of good storytelling, and less anything to do with the kind of rigorous internal logic that a lot of people mean when they talk about worldbuilding.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-16 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Eliminate the dragons and I'm all with you.
Personally I find fantasy far too boring and way to much repetitive to really let it go as it is. If it's not Tolkien, it's Potter, and that's basically it.
Good world building and character development are all my style, but not if everything else is the same sorry rehash someone else perfected a long, long, time ago,
