That's it, really. I like the canon universe and want more of it. Modern AUs where there's no magic and everyone's got mundane (if idealized) jobs aren't so interesting to me.

Yes, this exactly. I like modern AUs if they actually keep the aspects of the original canon that made it interesting, or find ways to translate said aspects into a modern setting. But a modern setting that's totally mundane? No way.
