Re: What's your favorite AU setting?

Merfolk, vampires, other creature-AUs and fantasy in general. Also for-want-of-a-nail type AUS.

I have a weakness for soulmate AUs even though I have issues with the general premise of them. Like, is there supposed to be a scientific theory of how it happens (HOW?), or is it straight up magic? If it does seem to be magic, what does that imply about AUs that otherwise have a real-world, non-fantasy setting? Do different cultures ever have conflicting interpretations of what a "soulmate" is? (Someday I'd like to write a fic where one side thinks their soulmate is their destined spouse and the other side thinks they're a soul-stealing demon who must be slain for the person to be whole again.)

tbh today I learned there's no Gaelic word for 'soulmate' and that the closest is 'soul friend' and now I'd adore seeing that play out.

With soulmates there are WAY too many to decide if they play on the line of magical (marks grow on the body as you get closer to one another) or some sort of scientific chemical reaction that occurs when coming into contact with your soulmate, (the you're colourblind until you meet your soulmate) and even the whole 'fate' deal when two different people have the same exact pattern or birthmark or whatever. The list goes on and on.

The thing about soulmates is that there is so many to choose from. Soulmates don't even have to be good, romantic, or friends. You can have a rival soulmate. I'd have to know more specifically about what you're talking about than I do already to give specifics, (if you even want them), but Soul Mates are always workable in my books!
