I was actually surprised they were able to sneak the "bow to the ancestors" in there because that's such an important part of the Chinese wedding ceremony that it would/should have been obvious to at least the Chinese audience.

AYRT

What I'm wondering now is if they used a censor decoy, got something more explicit cut to allow for what they really wanted. Like was there something in the script that implied something racy that got cut so they could have the implied wedding?

ngl I've always wondered if that wasn't the point of the Venerated Triad's sworn brothers ceremony, which also seemed to give off the marriage vibes. But it would give the show runners an example to point to of other bowing that was definitely not a marriage so LWJ and WWX's bowing also definitely wasn't a marriage nothing to see here!!!

I think most of their audience in China were probably fans of the book. It was hugely popular before the show was made. Whereas in the West the show came first.

Surprisingly, not entirely. This was one of the most popular and successful dramas (both in views and rewards it received) of the last years and while the novel was very popular, BL novels are still a niche genre. And there actually were a lot of people (mostly guys from what I heard) who didn't know about the novel and were utterly convinced that WWX would end up with his adoptive sister, of all people.

I figured it's also a pretty basic aspect of ancestor worship, especially when you're asking for atonement or paying respects to your ancestors that there's room for ambiguity.
