133: Haku's one of my favorite characters, although I still love Howl more.
147: Honestly, I don't get why everyone likes him so much... my only guess is that he appears a lot more in the anime than he does in the manga, because he's there for like, 5 pages.
I'm still heartbroken over L :(

He appears less in the anime than in the manga. And I admit I had no idea who he was until I got into fandom, BUT...

I think people like him for one of a few reasons:

1. As an accessory to Mello's story (as he is Mello's only canonical "friend" or whatever)
2. Because they're interested in Wammy's House and there are only three Wammykids we know anything about aside from L, with Matt being one of them.
3. Because fandom likes characters who have just enough to them to build a skeleton onto which flesh can be shaped according to the preference of the fan. We know like, I don't know, 5 or 6 things about Matt - enough that we can tell if someone is just pulling his personality completely out of their ass and to provide some semblance of continuity between versions? But at the same time, there isn't enough for someone to tell you (generic) that the version of him you love so much is wrong.

Honestly I think it's often a combination of all three.

Great analysis :) Yeah, that's probably it. I've seen lot of people write slash fanfictions with him/Mello as well.
