The gameplay in 1 was better, both are take offs of Zelda.

Disney/FF nostalgia is nice, but KH1 also fared better than KH2 because KH1 didn't try to translate scenes from the movies into the games, which worked only to it's detriment.

A story so complicated the Matrix is jealous? Holy shit, are you serious? The story was absolute shit. It was nonsensical, boring, contrived, stupid and drawn out.

None of the character designs were even the least bit memorable and all fall along the same vein. The heartless are cute, but again, that's not enough.

The graphics, I will grant you. The expressiveness of the characters really adds a lot of charm.

They're nothing like Zelda. Zelda is an aventure game with puzzle elements. Combat is based mostly over strategy and timing.

Kingdom Hearts is an all-out fast-paced action about skill game with stats. If anything, Kingdom Hearts is a take-off of Zone of the Enders without the mecha.

But I do agree that the first game was much better than the second.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I just meant that real-time combat + magic isn't exactly revolutionary.

I don't hate Kingdom Hearts, I think they're quite fun. I just don't think that they're all they're cut out to be and I'd like the second one a lot better if they pared away all the needless crap and just let me beat up FF characters with a giant fucking key.

So... is the only reason you asked in the first place so that you could tell people "no your opinion sucks, mine is more correct"?

No, I was genuinely curious. I was also pretty sure that the reasons would be ridiculous, so there's that.

Being predisposed to disagree with the idea that KH is a really really really great game means that I couldn't be curious and genuinely interested in why somebody felt that way? Oh ok.

While I agree KH2 was a major let down in comparison to KH1, it was more of a story integration problem. In KH1 the exploration of worlds and completion of each was directly linked to progression of the story and discovery of what the hell was going on. In KH2 it was more 'we know what's going on, we're gonna show you bits of it for 2 hours in a mindnumbing tutorial, and then you'll get several hours of Disney based gameplay that ends up having little to nothing to do with the overall story before finally reaching the conclusion where we'll explain everything all at once.' Also, KH1 did translate scenes from the movies on some of the worlds - The Little Mermaid and Aladdin as example, I can't remember any others.

Right, but doing it a couple of times isn't really the same as doing it for every world, you know what I mean? A direct shot-for-shot, line-for-line redo just isn't interesting. NMBC is one of my favourite levels in KH2 because it isn't a direct take... and because Sora gets so excited to see Santa, but I think that ties into what you were saying about graphics.

I think it had problems beyond just story integration. I think it got unecessarily complicated, and that it did this with everything: The first game was straightforward. The villains were the disney bad guys, plus one token evil silver haired dude you could beat up at the end of the game in order to save the world from the vague threat of "darkness." It's not a strong idea, but it works, and it's perfectly acceptable for the purposes of the game. The trouble starts when you try to build on an idea that was weak to begin with, especially since the one they added really just confused everything, undid half of the first game, and made no sense. The two hour tutorial is just unforgiveable in my opinion. So is introducing your plotline in a seperate, KH 1 1/2 DS sequel that nobody in NA could play, but I digress.

Oh yeah, I'll admit there were other issues, especially with the underlying weaknesses of the storyline and plot (which are only going to get worse, looking at the future games in the series). In fact, most of the fandom (that I interact with) are all under agreement that most of the game doesn't make sense and that Nomura is either fucking nuts or hitting the shrooms. Or maybe both.

But in terms of looking at KH2 as a game, my main issue is with the integration that I just explained to you - if the however long Disney gameplay had actually had something to do with the overall storyline, rather than seeming to be 'just wander around these worlds until something happens' (that something being TWTNW finally being reachable), then the game itself would have played better. As it was it was slog/grinding with little pay off, and was clear to everyone that Nomura just wanted to tell whatever weird story he'd come up with and forgot about the Disney stuff that came with the franchise until the last minute.

As for playing through the movies, iirc, the majority of the worlds that did that in KH2 were not worlds you got to play in KH1 - so there's no telling that if they had been available in KH1 it would have been any different.

Tarzan world, Wonderland, the Olympus Coliseum, Agrabah, Pinnochio, The 100 Acre Wood, Neverland, and Halloween Town all touched on things that had happened in the original story without going shot-by-shot. Even Atlantica only had one shot that was exactly the same.

The only new world with any variation was the Timeless River in KH2.

Yes, and, as I've already said, the Disney aspect of KH2 was pretty much lumped on like an afterthought - one that they clearly didn't put much thinking into. The Disney aspects of KH1 were better done - I've already acknowledged that - I simply pointed out that at least two of the worlds did 'play out the movie', except with the inclusion of Heartless, keyblades and keyholes.
