Dude. The Kindred are scarier than any other vampire out there--I mean, Jesus, have you seen a Tzimisce bust out Vissicitude in the middle of combat and fleshcraft a pack of Garou together? D=

I'll give you that they're superior to other vampires, though. At least they're not all mopey and, "OMG I'M NOT HUMAN ANGST ANGST WAIL."

Werewolves, though. They're bad ass, both in mythology and pop culture. Mmm, W:tA...

I didn't think the vampires in the game were scary. And I think my friend owned the scarier version. I suppose I liked the game only because I was able to utterly dislike every single vampire in it (including the character I played) so much. Nobody tried to make them all that sympathetic. Same with the Dresden Files (only read three books so far).

W:tA?

Scarier...version? You mean your friend ran Sabbat rather than Camarilla? Yeah, that can get pretty sick; Sabbat-affiliated Kindred don't even bother with pretending to be human, for the most part. It's rather impossible to create a sympathetic character in that setting. You can come pretty close in a Camarilla game, though.

Werewolf: the Apocalypse. It was another setting in White Wolf's old World of Darkness game series. Unlike V:tM, players are playing the "heroes" in a spiritual war that has been raging for eons--reluctant heroes in many cases, and tragically flawed at best, but heroes nontheless since the opposition is just so much worse. Where V:tM plays mostly on Kindred politics, W:tA focuses on personal and external horror (not that the Garou aren't political creatures, mind--competition for alphaship and various sept/pack positions can get pretty nasty).

I have no idea what she meant. She just said that she had to import it from somewhere because she didn't want the less gory version available in Germany. I have to admit I don't really know what's possible in the universe beyond the game she owned.

... I browsed Wikipedia a bit and just found out that it's all based on pen and paper RPGs. I only know the one computer game.

Oh, I see. Yeah, I couldn't really get into the V:tM videogames, myself. I played the LARP first, and that had so much more potential for political backstabbing and, in the case of the Sabbat, absolutely vile inhuman behavior. It was more fun. Plus, since you were the one that actually built your character, you decided what his/her background was--where they were from, how old they were, when they were turned, what kind of person they were in life, what kind of person they became in death, et cetera.

If you get a chance, grab the gaming books for tabletop or MET (Mind's Eye Theatre, the LARP version) and get a group together for one of the old WoD settings. V:tM is a good starting point, but tends to favor highly specialized and 2D characters. The Asian-centric companion setting, Kindred of the East, is also good, but beware players wanting to rip ideas directly from anime and manga. Werewolf: the Apocalypse and Wraith: the Oblivion are both great for a more mature gaming group looking for well-rounded characters and true horror. If you want something a little more whimsical and easier to customize for an all-ages setting, go for Changeling: the Dreaming. If you're looking for cracked out, reality-breaking fun that can easily work in horror or mystery, go for Mage: the Ascension or Mummy: the Resurrection.

Sadly, I find Demon: the Fallen too boring to recommend, since it generally only appeals to spooky kids who want to indulge in shocking behavior to freak out their parents or whatever. I haven't played Orpheus, so I can't really give an opinion on it.

Oh, I forgot Hunter: the Reckoning. Awesome setting, and if you want to talk about impossible odds, it's all right here! You play mortals who hunt supernatural beings here, which, uh...tends to mean that those who don't play it smart get squished pretty easily. It is a horror-oriented setting, but much more given to strategy.
