So is sexual fantasy the only valid reason to ship something now, or?

I already made a distinction between just shipping something and shipping it in an overly sexual manner. (That's usually what I think of when I think of slash, is fucking.) I don't get the point of acting like you're sexually turned on by something and then not actually being sexually turned on by it, and just pretending like you are, as a joke.

I ship lots of pairings, but just because I like the characters in that relationship, not because I fap to it.

And you can't slash characters together just because you like the characters in that relationship? What does the relationship being between two guys have to do with whether or not I fap to it? Sure I do fap to most of my ships, and they are mostly slash, but it's hardly just the fact that I fap to it which makes me choose to slash those characters. There are some characters I slash where half the time I only want to read them falling in love and been sweet and adorable and lovely, and will occasionally skip sex scenes in fic.

This: That's usually what I think of when I think of slash, is fucking. is just a really baffling idea to me. Slash can't be sweet and schmoopy and non-pornographic?

Nobody seems to be paying attention to what I'm saying.

I'm saying I don't get people who seem to be sexually into a pairing and they're just feigning sexual arousal for the lulz. If you actual fap to a ship/slash/whatever, that doesn't bother me or confuse me at all.

is just a really baffling idea to me. Slash can't be sweet and schmoopy and non-pornographic?

That's just the connotation I get when I hear "slash," because of how it's been used. I'm old compared to most in fandom, so maybe it gets used differently these days.

Oh, I'd taken that into account as your opinion, but couldn't really think of anything useful to add, so I just brought up the point I was confused on.

The way I've seen it used, 'slash' just means any ship between two men (or between any two people of the same sex, depending on context). With the usage I'm used to, you could call a fic slash regardless of whether it was an NC-17 PWP or whether it just featured the two guys kissing once on the lips with no tongue. What you said came across a little bit like "gay relationships are only about sex", but I guess we had our wires crossed and had two different definitions of 'slash'.

With regards to pretending to be sexually aroused by things you aren't sexually aroused by... hmm. It is something I've done, mainly just within certain contexts where it's understood that that kind of thing is expected (capslock comms for example). I don't really know how to explain that. I don't run around saying I ship pairings I don't ship, but if I'm talking in a capslock comm and a particularly weird combination of characters comes up, I might say something like "LOL, I SHIP IT". I guess the humour comes from the fact that it can be a kind of parody of normal fannish shipping behaviour?

Oh, I see what you mean. I definitely didn't want to imply that I see any gay relationship as purely sexual. (Morrissey icon is totally relevant.)

Also, thanks for explaining the parody aspect. I still think it's kind of silly, but at least that makes more sense put in that context.

I do think there might be some elements to it other than just parody. Fandom is thinky about a lot of things, but I've not seen much meta on the patterns found in "absolutely no srs bsnss allowed!" humour. Which is understandable, in as much as meta is way too srs bsnss for those kinds of comms, but I still think it would be quite interesting. And given how popular "pretending to find things arousing" is as a type of humour, I wouldn't be surprised if there were several different factors contributing to it.

For example, I can't talk for the rahmbamarama comm, but capslock supernatural has created a kind of 'anything goes' space where you can talk about having gross/disturbing kinks or shipping bizarre pairings and no one will bat an eyelid. I think creating a space like that also allows people to 'try on' ships or kinks that they otherwise might be afraid to admit to. Everything is so far out there, and very extreme squickfic is actively encouraged, so you can respond to a fisting fic with "FAP FAP FAP, THAT WAS SO HOT" and know that no one is going to think "Really? You like that?" -- partially because fisting is comparatively un-extreme, but also because people will have no idea if you actually mean it or not. If you're just coming to terms with the fact you might find fisting (or whatever) hot in a serious way, joking about it in a space where no one knows how serious anyone is being about what they find hot can be kind of liberating.

I feel really "out of the loop" now. I guess I am getting old...

Re: confusing

(Anonymous) 2008-12-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I don't think you're necessarily 'out of the loop'. That kind of humour is quite popular, but it's still only a small, small portion of fandom, and regardless of how old you are probably only really going to know about the corners of fandom you like to spend your time in. (For example, I know next to nothing about anime fandom, and that's a huge swathe of fandom not to be familiar with. Makes me feel out of the loop sometimes, but I'm sure if I ever decided to jump in I would get used to whatever loop I landed in soon enough. *g*)

I don't think it helps, either, that a lot of people find 'lulzy' humour somewhat abrasive, so never really learn what those comms are like from the inside, and I'm sure if you showed my last comment to most of the members of capslock_spn they would laugh at me for taking it so seriously. There's not really anyone to talk to the uninitiated about what that kind of humour does, and I'm sure from the outside it all looks really bizarre. Personally I'm convinced that there is method in the madness, though. ;D
