134. I have noticed a phenomenon over the 40+ years that I've been alive. The more homogeneous a group becomes, the more viciously it treats deviations from the popular opinion. (This is why I avoid the hell out of "communes" and "intentional communities" and utopian thinkers.) Once you think you're in a group of people just like you, it's much more upsetting to run into evidence to the contrary. Hence the nastiness when someone dares dissent from popular fannish opinion. Or all the "OMG OPPRESSED UNPOPULAR OPINIONS" that are actually very common. Stay away from Fandom Wank. If F!S makes you depressed, FW will make you suicidal.

128. Case takes down genuinely vicious personal attacks once they're pointed out to him. (Believe me I know.) And wouldn't you rather be unpopular than unnoticed? If all the secrets about you are NICE, enjoy it.

127. You don't need to cosplay a character to wear incredibly gaudy clothes at a science fiction convention, anime convention, goth club, goth dance, or the like. Get the coat.

115. You need professional help. Your life is worth saving. You probably need an anti-depressant medication and some counselling. Don't keep expecting popular culture to save your life; get the help you need. If you are a minor or are in school, there are programs where you can get the help for free through your school.

And it's just a coat. You can wear "normal" clothes underneath and take it off when you get inside. Not to mention that flashy costume-y coats have been "in" for the last couple of years.
