Aaaand then the child has just as much right to say, "Look, mom, if you are that goddamned intolerant and feel you have any right to control other people's lives and happinesses just because YOU don't approve, then I will lose all the respect I have for you. All of it."
People have the right to pull douchebag moves. Then other people have the right to call them out on pulling douchebag moves and tell them that they suck for it. If people have the right to make choices, they also have the responsibility to deal with the consequences of said choices.
