No, seriously, beyond gameplay, how?

Ugh, I agree with you that the KH series was subpar, but this sentence is full of so much fail.

I realize that there are people out there who play video games more for stories than gameplay - hell, people like that created the success of the FF series - but to assert that the story of a game is even close to as important as the gameplay is so much bullshit and chips.

EDIT: It occurs to me that before I make such a vehement statement I should qualify it - how about the fact that no Game of the Year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_the_year) has ever been a single-player RPG? And those very RPGs that do manage to break the top ten (KotoR, Bioshock, Deus Ex, etc.) do so because of the top-tier, exciting gameplay they add to their stories? And that many of the best-selling, highest-rated games of all time (RE4, Halo, Zelda) have terrible stories or no story at all?

I like good storytelling too, and it can certainly enhance the experience of a game. But if you want an excellent story, read a book. Games are games.

I swear I saw Bioshock picked as Game of the Year by some magazine or other. There was totally a sticker on it when I bought it. Every magazine picks its own Game of the Year, anyway, and there ends up being more than one ~~really, every magazine that didn't pick Portal last year should be burned in a heap~~ - a number of which just like to curry to popular opinion to keep readers happy. Unless you're talking specifically about A|AS or GameSpot, in which case I will shut my trap.

I think Bioshock was only PC Game of the Year, rather than Game of the Year overall.

(A fantastic game to be sure, but it would have been panned if the gameplay had been mediocre rather engaging, being essentially steampunk!Systemshock rather than an original concept.)
