Honestly, I think there's plenty of evidence in Labyrinth to support the idea of Sarah becoming depressed or suicidal, or having been abused. And beyond that, people change. Even if you don't believe that there's anything in the movie to support darkfic, a good writer can always set it up with post-movie events.

You're completely entitled to your own opinion, of course, but as with all fic: don't like, don't read. There's a place for darkfic in every fandom, just as there's a place for light fluffy fic, and everything in between. The Labyrinth fandom may be fairly small, but I've still seen fic of every type.

Also, and perhaps this is just me, but I feel like the reason a lot of people are drawn to certain pairings (especially those with a large age and power difference like Sarah/Jareth) has to do with having a safe, healthy place to indulge what you term "victim fantasies." I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. They should be allowed to write whatever floats their boat, just like you are.

Wow, that comment ended up longer than I expected... :-)

Depressed I get. Suicidal... yeah, maybe. But abused? Where's the evidence for that? I thought she was just a bratty teenager with an active imagination. So yeah, I was just wondering what you saw that I didn't.

Well, I suppose that - in the case of pre-movie abuse, anyway - it's more speculation on my part than actual evidence. I've probably spent way too much time overanalyzing the movie. I should warn you that I’m quite interested in the study of alternative sexuality, and, as do we all, I tend to connect everything I see to what I’m personally interested in.

The labyrinth itself, at the very least, represents Sarah's psyche. At most, it is an actual physical manifestation of her subconscious existence. Do I think Sarah acts like a rape victim? No. But there are elements of the labyrinth and of Jareth that strike me as interesting and odd. Jareth is highly sexualized as a character, from his much discussed pants to his eager preening in every scene he has with Sarah. This could be explained by normal early teenage curiosity. But Sarah also gives him a riding crop. This, I find extremely intriguing. He has no practical reason to carry such an instrument (we never see any evidence of horses in the labyrinth), and never - to my memory - uses it in a significant way. But it is a persistent part of his costume, showing up in more than one scene. When he does use it, it is in a violent manner against other humanoid beings. Following this line of thinking, I'm immediately overwhelmed with plot bunnies for various types of darkfic - plenty of fanfic has been based on less.

The kicker, though, is their last scene together. Remember, Jareth's actions - at least, while they are in the world of the labyrinth - are ultimately controlled by Sarah. His pleading takes on a very Dominant/submissive tone: "fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave" and "just let me rule you, and you can have anything you desire" both suggest a rather less than standard relationship. Why does he word his bargaining so? It sounds quite a lot like coercion by an older, powerful figure in exchange for gifts or favors from a younger and powerless victim to me, something that Sarah wouldn't be likely to inject into her fantasy without having some experience herself, whether first or secondhand. The scene could be interpreted as a classic example of the victim of abuse acting out the situation in order to try and change it, which Sarah, as we know, succeeds in doing.

I think the conclusion that we can all draw here is that I'm way, WAY too into this movie. Overthinking much? :-)

Wow. Maybe you are too into this movie, but I tell you what, I feel the overwhelming need to go find some Labyrinth darkfic right now.

TBH, I'm impressed. I love to analyze my movies too, but I've never been able to take Labyrinth at anything more than face value. For me, Sarah really did wish her brother away and spend the night with goblins trying to get him back. I think it's because this is one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid, way before I could think in any way other than "Look, Mommy, that girl has a goblin!" and it's just persisted into adulthood.

In short, kudos to you (I so almost wrote Ludos. Do you want a bunch of Ludos?)
