Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2020-07-16 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made and submitted them for you! As usual, including the fandom and full character names is always helpful, and I'll do my best with the image choice.

If you've previously left a comment in the secret thread but haven't seen your secret yet, never fear! I have a bunch that haven't been submitted yet. I just try to space them out so case isn't overwhelmed all at once.

Wishing you the best,

a secret maker

I like a lot of bad fantasy. In fact, I found a list yesterday of books or authors in the genre considered bad, and I probably liked close to half of them. And a couple of them I hadn't heard of sounded interesting and got put in my Amazon cart.

Bonus secret: one of the ones I now want to buy is horribly sexist stuff I'd be ashamed to admit to anyone I'd read. But the plot sounds interesting, and TBH the sex stuff does too.

Do you want to name any names for the image choice, or shall I wing it?

I grew up poor. I have a lot of sympathy for people living in poverty. But if someone I’m following on tumblr posts about their financial woes and asks their followers for money more than once, I stop trusting them.

I don’t mean, “I really want to buy a new laptop so I’m opening commissions” or anything like that. I mean, “Here is my tale of financial woe and need; please help me by giving me money.”

I never say anything about it (except here on F!S), but inwardly I stop trusting the person.

I used to follow someone like this. I thought they might be genuine with their first post 'cause shit does happen, but she kept doing it and doing it. The worst is that she'd make a post begging for money because she lost her job/got in a car crash/her cat needs surgery, and then a few days later, she'd make another post about all the cool shit she just bought. I stopped following her when she said she needed money for chemo and then came clean and said she didn't have cancer, just wanted to but some expensive figures.

That's so strange to me. I wouldn't even ask my family for money.

I'll happily make this secret, but I'm not sure it'll pass muster with case for being a fandom secret, per se...

I still log in to my Gaia account every few months or so, just on the off chance that some of my online friends have decided to log in too. They helped me through some really hard times when I was a weird, friendless teenager and I never really got to thank them for being such good friends to me before the economy inflated and everyone left.

I was a huge ass troll on Gaia, but sometimes I'll log back in to read old convo's to relive old but good times.

I finally watched Hamilton with friends on the weekend and... it was, okay? Like, 'meh'? I feel I'd get ostracized on the internet for that because there's so much raving about it.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm not the hugest fan of speak-singing (I hesitate to call Hamilton rap when there's some amazing rap out there that is more than just speak-singing) or if it's because everyone is such an asshole.

Like, obviously they were real and flawed people, but it's hard to enjoy something when you're kind of hoping all of them get shot...

(Also LMM voice is just... terrible. Especially compared to everyone else's performance.)

My favorite parts of the musical are the parts in the first half with Hamilton's friends and the Schuyler sisters (I think in large part because they're the most likable characters) and the villain songs for Burr and Jefferson (in large part because they're intentionally villains).

So I think those bits sort of get around the stuff where everyone's an asshole.

Is that the musical where they retcon history and then rap about it? Ugh no thanks.

Hamilton has been and continues to me a horrible musical. Like I can't even listen to it- that is not rap, not even in the slightest, but my love for musicals makes me hate that it's been turned into a movie a little bit because I'm afraid it'll turn off so many people from actual good musicals.

Also I love Lin-Manuel, so it hurts hearing all this backlash against him.

(...I guess this could be a secret in and of itself if you're interested secret maker?)

I'm so sad when I visit a fic writer's page only to discover that a fic I liked was an experiment, and the rest of the fics future other pairings from the same fandom. You had a choice between my OTP and some other pairing, and you chose wrong.

Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2020-07-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always sad when this happens, but the author's other fics are for entirely different fandoms I'm not into. Sometimes I'll read some of it anyway, but not if it's for a fandom or pairing that I actively dislike.

I wish I was less picky about fanfiction and which fandoms my brain decides to hyperfixate on. By the time I've narrowed a fandom's fics down to pairings I like, characterization I agree with, AUs I like, and so on, there's sometimes not much left that I really enjoy reading. Once or twice I've been lucky enough to enjoy a juggernaut pairing in a medium sized fandom, but not often.

Same, same, same... Like I get so exited when I find a ship I love, but apparently I am the only one, or I've been drinking the good juice and interpreted my ship in a way nobody else seems to agree with.

My ATLA Azula headcanon is that in an effort to prove to herself that Zuko and her mom were lying to themselves, and were actually miserable, she went out and charmed her way into having a whole ass family (partner of any gender, and several adopted kids of various ages). But it turned out that they were right, and she was wildly happy so she never came back to them out of shame.

It's one of the only ways for me to reconcile her lack of presence in TLOK. I can't understand her being so certain that she's supposed to guide Zuko in his dark destiny and then just never showing up again.

S!B I actually just want her to be happy, and I don't like that Azula didn't get an Iroh. I'm not sure it would actually be kind to allow someone of Azula's temperament custody of kids, and this is very "to be happy add family" which I usually HATE.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure I need this much redemption for her. I'm glad that we got to see some more sympathetic stuff with her towards the end, but I still prefer her remaining a villain. She's just such a great villain that giving her this kind of ending seems to cheapen that for me.

You do you, though.

I miss Channel Awesome solely because of all the crossovers.

Everyone's still making videos, and for a lot of them their content has improved drastically, but I just miss the days of Lindsay, Todd, Kyle, Allison, Rap Critic etc just randomly popping up in each others vids for a couple of seconds or to explain something. It always felt like a bunch of friends hanging out and it always seems lonely with them alone on their individual channels now.

B!S: Nella appearing in The Hobbit Trilogy and Allison popping up at the end of the "Pill in Ibiza" review made me so happy I genuinely cried

I’m sick and tired of sexism in fantasy where One Plucky (Not Like The Other Girls) Girl has to fight twice as hard to prove she’s just as good and teach boys a Valuable Lesson that sexism is Wrong and that girls as just equal as boys.
Nope.
To me it only reinforce the idea that it’s only natural for boys to think that girls are inferior, and for most girls to agree (because they actually are amirite?)
It’s fantasy! You create this whole world! Why not have an equal, sexism-free setting where superior/inferior is never ever discussed and set it as an example?
