(Anonymous) 2020-07-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)This. If it's a character I know and like, I'll read a fic with them inserted into a fandom that I don't know; all the other characters become OCs. Even then, I check the wiki to get an idea of the background of the other fandom characters. But -- and I've tried a couple of times, for some reason or other -- reading characters I've never met leaves me unsatisfied, disinterested, and unlikely to finish the fic.*
The thing is, most fic doesn't do a lot of world-building, because the reader is assumed to be familiar with the canon. And that's fine; I know SGA or NCIS, for example, and don't need a lot of explanation to feel these characters. But I've never seen Teen Wolf (not sure I get that channel), so the fics I've looked at leave me cold. It's such a popular fandom in my circles, I thought I might enjoy the fic if I checked it out (I know some people are drawn into some fandoms by way of fic first, then canon), but it did nothing for me.
*Original character fic is different; those usually have basic world-building and relationships that are developed instead of the author jumping in feet-first. I've enjoyed several by some authors I follow on AO3.
