I've been listening to a podcast about mass shooter events, and they talked about what I already knew - that people will go into survival mode and let their loved ones die (barring biological children). They had some examples of that. I know this is just human nature, but I've been thinking about being in that situation and letting my best friend die.

It disturbs me greatly. I've told her before that if we're on a sinking boat she must save herself and not try to save me/wait for me to save her.

Not always. While we certainly do have fight or flight instincts and will seek cover or run, there are definitely examples of people doing the opposite.

Peter Wang
Kendrick Castillo
Riley Howell

& numerous teachers who have died trying to save their students

Thank you for these examples! I looked up all three. Peter Wang and Kendrick Castillo were just kids!

You're welcome. I am fascinated by what allows people to make decisions like that in such a terrifying situation. I remembered another example too!

Duaa Ahmad didn't die but she did make sure other people were able to get to safety before she did. You can see her on this video holding the door open after she enters the security code.

Thank you! I find this so interesting too!
