As a trans person who occasionally makes genderbend art, yes
venusundae: krystal lies languidly in a sweater (091 (there is no fault))

i agree. i do think it's important to have trans rep that is respectful of actual trans experiences. but genderfuckery, as you put it, does not necessarily invalidate that. plus trans people can be into that too? i'd rather normalize playing with gender expression (within fandom and without) so that people can feel safer and more welcome to explore it and find where they are comfortable. or just to have fun!
icecheetah: Nonbinary flag Tedd Verres (tedd)

Trans person here who was MASSIVELY helped in the path to self discovery through genderfun in fic (and canon. I mean, I chose the icon I used here for a reason.)
kamino_neko: Tedd from El Goonish Shive. Drawn by Dan Shive, coloured by Kamino Neko. (Default)

*waves in iconry* (Also chosen for a reason. Multiple reasons, actually. Every aspect of Tedd in this shot speaks to me in some way. >_> )

Also agreed on the rest of it, too.

You sounds like a blast to share a fandom with. Nothing says fun like someone telling you how you should enjoy stuff.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
plz work on your reading comprehension

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
How do you even get that vibe from this secret?

Secret: Fandom is big enough to have both good trans representation and all kinds of genderfuckery too. ╰(*°▽°*)╯

You: You are a party-pooper trying to ruin my fun! ╰(‵□′)╯

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's ironic when the "wow you sound like fun" comment is so unnecessary and needlessly defensive it makes the person posting it seem like they're probably unpleasant to interact with.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
That was their point, that people shouldn't police others so much on how to enjoy stuff.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. People need to realize that there are plenty of reasons to want to explore gender presentation that have nothing to do with being trans.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly as a radical feminist who happens to love "genderfuckery" forever and in every way I'm so annoyed by this TRANS ONLY ALLOWED behavior because I ... end up letting myself and others down all the time lol. Can't we have the "politics-free" genderfuckery corner? Please

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know who actually says "trans only allowed" though.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Asshole TERFs looking for excuses to justify their bigotry, mostly. Like the people who insist that Christmas is being canceled because a barista said Happy Holidays to them once.

AYRT: A quick search came up with lots and lots of discussion talking exclusively about fanfic/art, which is yet another indication that a lot of fandom really doesn't understand LGBTQ culture as much as it thinks it does, and thinks the world revolves around it.

A lot of trans people got our start doing different forms of genderfuck inside and outside LGB communities. Yeah, some flavors of that can be anti-trans, but it needs a broader discussion than "no don't do it."

Congrats on making the first "[x] has two hands" diagram that didn't make me seethe inwardly. :-) You're right, and I'm glad you said it.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
While googling genderbending, I saw tumblrina posts about how gender-bending is transphobic and you are a terrible person if you do genderbending.

The stupidest thing about it? All trans friends I have love genderbending, and it was how they came to the realization they were trans.

I say this as a native hispanic person, sometimes it feels like they're mad for the same reason people got mad at Speedy Gonzales. We love the exploration and representation, but then there's some Karen getting mad on our behalf...

(Anonymous) 2020-07-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I mean I get the logic behind it, the weird "there are exactly two genders and they're both cis people" implication that often comes with genderbend content

but The Discourse™ loves to exaggerate "I am concerned about X for a few reasons" into "X is HitlerSatan 9001 and if you like it you should die immediately"

It is why I stay the hell away from a lot of social media. I was going to say neither tumblr nor twitter are sites for nuance, but neither are Facebook, Instagram, or anything else with moderatorless masses of users.

One thing I keep thinking about is a roleplay I made with a few friends, in which I had your standard male badass turned into a female magical girl. At first, I had written it as a joke with only two partners, but kept the personality as close to the original as I could, remembering they were still a highly capable and focused person that learns on the spot. And... that character ended up teaching me a lot about identity.

Something I had initially written as a joke eventually became a concept I absolutely loved to play, even in serious plots, choosing even to explain why the genderbending happens often. The personality did not change. Only the pronoun and the tools the character used or sometimes chose to wear. The character was every bit as competent and heroic in that new body as in the old one, and slowly accepted both states of being as one and the same. The character became stronger, both physically and emotionally.

And while genuinely enjoying playing that genderbending in which the character accepted both states, I came to ponder about my own gender, as well. Sometimes I felt the same. Sometimes I've realized I'm on a male point of view, and on others I'm comfortable with a female one.

I mean... I understand when even shows like Futurama have genderbending playing with absolute stereotypes. But then you have stuff like Adventure Time in which it explores a female Finn. I consider genderbending a form of transformation fiction. In the end, I believe it is a way to explore who we are as people, even when written for fanservice.
