Maybe the pairing being canon, and apparently portrayed well in said canon, is part of why there isn't much interest from fic writers? If the canon material is already doing a good job in scratching the 'itch' for that pairing, then there's not quite as much drive to write new material for it.

Depends on the fandom imo. I'm currently in the Mo Dao Zu Shi fandom and almost everything is Wangxian. My OTP is Xiyao and there's so little content in comparison.

Then again you may be right when the canon pairing is het.

mildly frustrated fistbump of solidarity anon, lmao.

it doesn't help that my other OTP is THE ship of it's fandom, so i'd gotten used to having lots of fic to search through to find what i want. and now it's not much above 1000 and a lot of that is intermingled with other ships i don't mind in spirit, but have no interest in reading, or is actually wangxian with xiyao there for a paragraph.

(this isn't ire at it being less popular, tbh i get why ppl wouldn't want to tangle with it bc it's so messy. but at the same time i'm starving, lol).

This has to be at least part of it. I know that as soon as a ship becomes canon I tend to lose interest in reading or writing fic about them... unless canon is doing such an awful job at it that I feel the need to fix it, of course.

Same. If canon is giving me what I want, I don't feel that same need for fic.

I stop shipping even if I don't like how it's written in canon, as I'm unable to ignore it.
