First off, I would like to make it clear that I don't care if someone likes the book better than the musical. That's a perfectly valid opinion. I am addressing the people who feel that preferring the book makes them somehow superior to those who prefer the musical, and/or those who look down on people writing musical-based or mixed-canon fic.

As for why? Wicked is, at its core, AU fanfiction. It is based on another canon. As a matter of fact, it is based on MIXED canon. The Witch of the West being green, ruby slippers, Glinda being from the North, only having three witches instead of four? All movie canon. And the green thing is pretty integral to the plot. The existence of Quadlings, a munchkin named Boq, and most of the map filling-in? Book canon. It just seems hypocritical to me to think that the book is superior because it came first, when Wicked itself is heavily influenced an adaptation of the source material.

For the record, while I mildly enjoyed both, I'm not a big fan of either form of Wicked. But as someone who grew up with Baum's book, I will say that the musical struck a lot closer to the Oz I knew than the book did. But that's just me.

Yeah, but the musical is based off Wicked-the-book. People who like the book probably (in my case, certainly) don't like the musical because it deviates so much from the source material, tonally and otherwise. Plus, THEY MADE FIYERO WHITE. Unacceptable!

....and "Wicked" didn't deviate from "The Wizard of Oz" at all, even though it's clearly based on it?

I'm sorry, this argument seems so strange to me. How dare the adaptation of an adaptation change things when the first adaptation ... also did?

Well, it's just personal preference. I like the book for the reasons I don't like the musical, so I don't like the musical. There are quite a few people who don't like Wicked-the-book because it's so different from both the original books and the movie (there was even a secret a while back that likened Wicked to "childhood rape".).

ah, well. Like the OP, I have no issue with personal preference! I personally prefer the musical because the book read, to me, like Maguire was trying too hard to push his agenda (and there were a lot of plots that were never resolved to my satisfaction :() but if you liked it, more power to you! I'm just kind of with the OP on this, though elitism in pretty much any respect tends to drive me batty. One brand of fan isn't any better than another, it's just different.

My whole argument is that it's ridiculous to feel superior for liking Wicked-the-book because it came first, when Wicked-the-book is, as the above anon said, an adaptation based on an adaptation of the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Like I said, it's perfectly fine to prefer the book and/or to dislike the musical. It's NOT okay to act like this somehow makes you better than someone who prefers the musical.

Oh, that is silly. I figured you meant Wicked book-lovers who feel superior to Wicked musical lovers because the musical's fluffier.

I think it's because the blue diamonds all over his skin would have been kind of hard to see from most seats except the front row.

Bit OT, but the Fiyero in the Canadian production I saw was black. I didn't know any difference so I went "What!? White?! D:" whenever I saw photos everywhere else.

THIS! I grew up reading the Oz books, and I think that's why the musical resonated with me a lot more than the book(s) did. I think the book(s) and their author are still pretty innovative, but I like the musical more.
