I've yet to read anything with Naruto as anything other than average and I'm okay with that, lol.

I agree.

It's annoying (and sometimes really surprising) for a character that I think is just okay. Hell, it's annoying when I think the character is relatively cute or pretty, or even when the praise goes way overboard for someone I do think is very attractive.

There's some real dissonance, though, when it's canon.

It's much more annoying to see unflatering discriptions. If I'm reading about a character I find them attractive and I don't wanna hear about too large noses or average faces. I'd rather read about emerald eyes and flowing locks than hear an author's subjective criticism of their looks.

Lol! I only think it's okay in one type of instance...

I think it's okay whenever a character is "strange" looking in canon. A really good example of this is Saitama from One Punch Man. He normally looks like a literal egg for much of the series (for those who don't know: https://img.mipon.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/05164321/saitama-one-punch-man-oppai-shirt1.jpg)...but when he gets "serious" during fights and certain moments, he suddenly looks like this (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4a/bd/23/4abd23f868098f208985b912c1892755.jpg). Both states are equally canon.

I see people in fanfics often write him as having quite plain/nondescript features which is often exacerbated by his "blank" look most of the time (fandom is like 99% sure Saitama is meant to have some form of depression), but when he opens up and is doing something he enjoys/takes concentration/otherwise brings him out of his "blah" funk, it makes him handsome in an unconventional way.

I rather like this headcanon that a large portion of the fandom has adopted. It works really well for the OTP of the fandom too, Saitama/Genos, because it would be very in-character for Genos to notice and want to bring out those moments of engagement/happiness from Saitama..

lol I feel that --not into Naruto, but I can def. see what you're saying. And as far a bishounen goes, I mean..,I feel like there's 3 types
1. nasty attitude that needs sweetening (or suffered a great deal and now is an asshole)
2. perv
3. super sweet mentor

or am I wrong?

I'm confused. What does headcanon have to do with anything when the characters have actual canon physical appearances?

honestly.....i feel like most of the animated and live action depictions are hot to someone, so I just think of it like a perspective. They're hot in the fanfic world!

I don't mind when someone is described as super-hot from the perspective of someone in love with them, that's fine. But I hate it when someone perfectly normal-looking in canon is described as so hot that people regularly swoon in the streets at their passing!
