I don't blame you for feeling that way....

Thanks for making my comment into a secret, OP! Also I love Mercer Mayer's fairy tale illustrations.

You're very welcome! I have a soft spot for Mercer Meyer's illustrations, too... ever since I got a collection of Grimm's Fairytales with them when I was a kid.

You know...sometimes I feel like i relate more to Belle, other times to the Beast. This is something that has evolved as I've grown older (as a kid, I related to Belle, but as I got older, I started seeing elements of the Beast as well, and a bit less of Belle -- the parts of her I didn't like much anyway). But he's capable of change. And I don't think about that aspect enough. We all are.

Also, these illustrations are beautiful -- I didn't know Mercer Mayer illustrated this as well.

Comment but not secret OP, here, and I can't definitively say I like the Beauty more than the Beast across every version I enjoy, it varies. But I relate a bit more to Disney animated Belle than Disney's animated Beast because I feel like he starts off meeting Belle as basically still a spoiled 10 year old, so far as his maturity goes. He's rude and gruff, but not all that deeply psychologically messed up, just a brat. Belle is aware of her status as an outsider without having the excuse of being physically othered. I'm definitely no beauty, but becoming one overnight wouldn't actually fix all my mental problems.

I've always loved beauty and the beast (tho the disney framing is my least favorite, i like it darker or with a more reasonable beast) and honestly, the only part I would want to be belle for is the access to the castle without the curse. on an emotional level, I think beast is dealing with something more relatable and more universal with regard to how we all human.

I love Beauty & the Beast in many of its manifestations, but I have yet to find a manifestation where I'm not disappointed when the Beast changes back into a Handsome Prince™.

I think a lot of us who love Batb stories feel similarly but I think a lot of outsiders think it’s because of self-identification with the beauty character. I love the story of someone looking past an ugly outside to see a beautiful inside because I am ugly. I am not physically attractive and this is escapism that allows me to think that someone might see past that. It’s part of the same reason why I love Cyrano tropes. It’s the hope that someone could see a decent interior and allow that to overcome the hideous exterior
