Half of my new M/M ship has a dead wife in canon, and I'm not really sure how to handle it. For some reason my brain wants to make him gay all along, but having a dead wife is a huge part of his characterization/motivation/backstory, and a lot of things wouldn't make sense if she never existed. Writing it where he never loved her doesn't sit right with me, either, though (especially since canon basically treats her as a saint). I keep thinking it would be far easier to make him bi, where yes, he loved his dead wife, and now he's fallen in love with a guy, there's really no need to make it complicated, but some stupid part of my mind keeps going "no, he has to be totally, completely gay!"

What the hell, brain?

Ehh, I'd stick to the bi idea, but I guess you could go with the beard situation, I wouldn't recommend it though. I forget the word for it, but when people get married to their best friend as because it's more socially acceptable and they love each other platonically very deeply anyway. Like he can still love her, but not sexually/romantically? That way you can keep the backstory and impact of her death and still make him gay?

I feel like making him bi is the best option, but I did think of a situation where he loved the idea of her more than anything else, and he really wanted to be a part of her family (they were close and happy and loved each other, while his was really fucked up and dysfunctional and it's been implied they were abusive) and was able to convince himself he loved her (and after awhile he did, in a platonic way). I feel like that could be done in a way that makes them both sympathetic, but I don't know that I'm capable of doing it. I haven't written anything in years, plus I feel like in general, my brain hasn't been working as well as usual since the beginning of quarantine, anyway, so it's frustrating.
