I agree solely on the grounds that if people in fandom also had another hobby, they wouldn't feel the need to pour their entire self-worth into it and spend all their time here conniving to become BNFs and starting wank for clout.

uh

what

The ironic part is that people with other hobbies don't spend enough time in fandom to notice or track or be bothered by who is starting wank for clout, so...

eh, I have a lot of other hobbies and I definitely notice, especially for the year or so that I gave fandom twitter an active try. People feel the need to weigh in on the wank du jour and it crosses your TL whether you're looking for it or not.

So I stopped using twitter and pretty much only interact with three friends in fandom via ao3 and text, which is great and I recommend it for everyone who complains about how twitter is ruining their mental health: just stop. Unfortunately a lot of people legitimately can't stop because they have no other interests or support system.

The thing is, it's really not that hard to keep that kinda stuff off your TL on Twitter

1) mute accounts that you notice doing it constantly
2) mute words that are associated with annoying discourse
3) notice who is putting the wanky stuff on your TL and either turn off retweets for that account or unfollow
4) always have your TL set to show you Latest Posts, not Top Posts, since Top Posts tend to be the highest engagement stuff and hence are more likely to be wanky

Of course if you don't care to do that then yes, Twitter is much less appealing and it's a very reasonable choice to just not be on there

ayrt

Lol, I definitely did all of this. Ended up following about 40 people, with a massive mute and block list, and still twitter would throw up at least a few dumb fucking takes in from people I don't follow.

Maybe my problem is I just have a really low tolerance for-- not just wank, but even just dumb twitter stuff. And I mean-- I only like about 5% of the people I meet IRL, so I don't expect that number to be any better online, so overall the ratio of "intelligent conversation by people whose company I enjoy" vs "idiotic twitter junk" was just not high enough to be worth it.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. Including the fact that I only end up liking/enjoying the company of about 5% of people I meet (particularly in fandom) while the remaining 95% are eventually annoyed by me or vice versa.

In my last attempt at Twitter fandom (its celeb-related) I swear some bnf my age was annoyed at "some people" (ie. me) for being "too excited over meeting them", as if I didn't have to work twice the hard and as if I didn't have the right to perceive it as a big event for me. At that point I locked my humble Twitter account of 20-something followers and shitposted fandom and life stuff until, well, until a "friend" told my ex about my love life and I deleted. Since then I can't have more than 3 followers at once before deleting in despair over my interesting content having a much lesser reach than wank. Not sure how people do it anymore.

But honestly? It's not like it didn't happen in other spaces. Guess the only "ok" space for me was Tumblr where I could just fill my personal page with interesting, aesthetic, pretty and/or intelligent stuff and not really care how others would perceive me (if their input was harsh, I could... turn off asks!) except for people I actually liked. Being a "bnf" seemed to matter less than being someone who produced interesting, reblog-able content. With Twitter (and other spaces) it's like, just too much work to block everything negative. Never thought I'd miss Tumblr but here we are.

Everything I've ever seen on the Internet leads me to believe that this would not happen and people should just start drama in the fandom dance subscene

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, drama is everywhere, sadly. Even non-fandom dancers get their share of it. Makes me wonder if people are ever capable of leaving high school behind.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope!

*would* start drama, not should. they shouldn't but they would.

I know it dumb to imagine it, but I'm cracking up at the idea of fandom fights turning into dance-off's to settle debates.

"No YOUR ship is problematic!"

Yup, you just sold me on this. OP is 100% right! EVERYBODY SIGN UP FOR DANCE CLASS IMMEDIATELY!! THIS NEEDS TO START HAPPENING NOW!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-22 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
...okay, but I would totally watch this :p?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
You, sir, win the prize.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this 100%
There are some people who really need to take their breaks from the internet and just, do anything else for at least an hour.
