And yet that's exactly what I'm saying. Honestly, I'm not even sure what argument you're tying to prove at this point, tbh. What I meant in my last post is that there are people who know about what said creator/actor has done and do not care, those who know nothing about it, and those who who justify it.
Meaning basically your points above.

I know you're not condoning or justifying his actions, but I can't see the point of your argument without the factor that you're still trying to defend them in some way. I know you're not, it's just a difference of opinion at this point really. Since the way I see it, is that those people who had to fear for their lives don't have that trauma forgotten just because time has gone by, or the fact that he has said he's reformed. I can't help thinking that in the same instance, even if J.K decided however many years from now that she was wrong and that she was sorry that it doesn't change the affect her words had on the public today. The impact still exists to those who's experienced it or have dealt with similar bigotry both past and present. The currency that it's happening isn't a factor to me.

Obviously this is where our opinions divide, I think. I don't believe either one of us are wrong, just that the angles we're looking at these situations don't exactly coincide. I might be missing the point entirely of course, but I'm not sure how else to perceive it.

I'm not trying to justify his actions, on two different levels. One, I don't think that someone who believes that Wahlberg has atoned is minimizing or justifying his actions. Because atoning for something does not erase the misdeeds. Two, I am not myself advancing the idea that Wahlberg has atoned; I just think that it's a legitimate matter of moral argument. My point is that this kind of moral argument does not pertain in the case of Rowling, and does in the case of Wahlberg, so it's not a good comparison.

To put it another way - you have your three categories of people (people who know and don't care, people who don't know, and people who justify it). And I think that "people who think Wahlberg has atoned" is a fourth category of person which is different from any of the other 3 categories.

Fair enough.

It's just that the way I see it, the ones who truly believe that he's atoned fall into the category of 'people who justify it', the same way those who believe J.K's comments shouldn't reflect their enjoyment of her books, because they separate creator from content.
A fourth category would definitely be more reasonable I suppose, but my mind can't help but combine those two in some way.
