Also, I don't know if I would call her a "consenting minor". He appeared to her when she was just a child after her mother died, to comfort her, etc. And as she grew older, and she knew she would have to marry, he basically promised her he would rescue her from such a fate. That they would be together. It's more or less revealed that his plot from the start was to convince her over to his side (a maligned kingdom) using magic and her "feminine sensibilities".

He was a dream to her, a fantasy, a confidant, and a number of things from a very young age. And she kind of realizes that toward the end of the first book too, when he leaves her pregnant and dies.
